Stalled jars - NO MORE! UPDATE
    #571774 - 03/06/02 07:48 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Originally my problem was stalled jars. They were inoculated on 1-29
and were a little more than 1/2 colonized at best. I asked for
suggestions for salvaging or expediting the colonization process.
You all responded with great tips. I also had recently lost 12 other
jars (inoculated w/ Mazatec on 2-21) due to some kind of yellow-tinted
bacteria that settled in before spores germinated (I thought).
I inoculated 10 more jars w/ Mazatec on 1-2 and feared I was starting
to see the awful yellow tint taking place again! My syringes were kind
of old (received 'em by mail in november). I thought that may have
been a potential cause. Go to the end of this thread for new pics
of the situation. I will put them up right now. Thanks.
Peace.

I'd pitch those and start over...try picking up a pressure cooker at Goodwill...I got an 18 quart all american pressure cooker from goodwill for 30 bucks

the ones done 1/29 are most likely contam'd or they'd be finished by now.
are you using a pressure cooker to sterilize ?
syringes from november should still be fine,
assuming they were good to begin with.

No sir (or Ma'am). With a large fairly tight-lidded steamer/kettle (Martha Stewart/K-Mart brand) substrate was steamed w/lids loosened at the lowest possible boil for an hour and some. The jars were individually covered w/ tin foil to fend off water seepage. 3 jars were steamed at a time. That number was raised to 6 after the realization that jars could be stacked in the kettle. This could be a problem me thinks. I don't like it. It seems all my jars have (and are) colonizing exceedingly slow. Thanks for the reply Hippy3. Then my last 2 syringes (Hawaiian) should be good? Time for a change in tek.
Peace.

is that yellow tint appearing at innoculatio points or all over? it MIGHT just be water deprived mycellium... have any pics?

Try using a PC for sterilizing jars.
As for your jars, untape holes and flip them for a better air exchange.

Yes BeppoMarx, the yellow tint occurs at inoculation points and then it develops something around the edges of this that looks like mycelium only splotchier and irregular. . Thanks for the idea MAIA. I will try untaping and flipping.

DrAbe,
yeah, that's what I'm thinkin'. An 18 quart All American from Goodwill for $30 is the ideal sterilizer. But I'll take what I can get at this point. I've had some success with the Martha Stewart stock pot. I can only move up from here. Trip in the Outdoors. Peace.

i dunno. ive had something very similar to this before.
did that yellow just appear or was it white then it turned yellow?
i wanna say that it was sterilized ok; but your jars are too dry and theyre drying out after using up all the water. and if youre getting repeated jars like this; your mixture very well be off. what recipe exactly are you using and how do you sterilize and cool the jars?

Yeah Bep, the yellow just appeared there at the inoculation points. It happened in approximately 5-7 days. It slowly faded in and then there was this white splotchy mycelium-like growth that appeared in irregular patches around the fucking yellow shit(excuse me). So my recipe is straight PF. I uh, lets see, uh I grind up some organic brwn rice (1/4 cup), add 50ccs of mineral water, then 1/2 cup vermiculite , blend until cohesive, and steam sterilize in my Martha Stewart stock-pot (which is prolly the problem). But this happened twice in row with Maz spores. I hang my head in sorrow. I'll put up sum more pics of this tragedy.

These pictures aren't too good either but can you see the yellowing? It seems like it fits the area where spore solution came out of the needle. This has nothing to, do with the original post which was my stalled jars however. That is another problem. MAIA gave me some help there and it seems to be working. I'll put up some pics of those jars too. There is the splotchy mycelium-like growth beginning on this one. These were inoculated on the 2nd with Mazatec spores.

so youre saying that this only happened with the maztec strain? was there 1 syringe used for both innocculation dates; or 2 seperate syringes? and you have another strain or batch of jars that are growing ok? if so its probably the syringe not your method; that crock pot should work fine.

i have the same problems. the recent batch i made were stained... almost flouresant yellow... some grow partcially... now the mycellium is pulling away from the jar. i've been doing what i've been doing all along. in the past i've never had this problem. i recently took about 3 out... broke them up and cased them in a tray. strange thing about the staining is that not all is contamination.

That's weird girlskater. You say some of the mycelia is healthy? I wouldn't call mine fluorescent. It's just an amber tint. This happened to my last tewo batches of 12 and 10 jars respectively. They were from two Mazatec syringes. When I tossed the first batch of 12 I can't say there was much of an odor, and there was no dust-cloud of spores when I slammed 'em out. This was about a week or so after I first noticed the yellow stains. There was some splotchy mycelia-like stuff starting to colonize but I wasn't patient enough to see what would happen. It just looked sketchy. You have any pics?

Thanks Bep, I'm still gonna get a pressure-cooker though 'cause I've got other problems i.e. stalled jars which may also be contaminated. These are inoculated 1-29. However, MAIA gave me the untape and flip tek and LOOK! after a few days these old jars are O'colonizin' again. I also put them in a warmer room thaen where they were before.

Uh, I guess I messed up this thread by trying to edit my original post. So, here's the "stalled jars" The red lines show where the mycelium stalled before. The untape and flip tek worked nice. Here's 2 of the Mazatapec jars Girlskater, you said you had the same problem. How are yours turning out?

Hey all!
The Mazatapec 1/2 pints are now all colonizing like
mad (with very healthy looking mycelium). I am
referring to the ones with the weird yellow stain
at the inoculation points. I am baffled. What
was the yellow stain? Anybody else have this?
The other "stalled jars" are quickly finishing now.
I have much condensation - will probably use the
Hippie straw tek - but the mycelium is looking strong.
Thanks MAIA! I really almost threw in the towel for
those jars (4 of them were inoculated 1-29 !).
