Good question. I've been thinking about going with
a big Rubbermaid one. I use a 10-gallon aquarium
now and it works fine for about 5 cakes. It is high-
maintenance too. I'll be birthing 9 cakes in the next
couple weeks, then 10 more, then (hopefully) 17
more (inoculated 3-17). I did purchase a pc and
am very pleased with it. I doubt if I'm quite ready
for casing. My biggest problem (in my hut) seems
to be regulating temperature. I live in Chicago. By
the way MAIA those contamination posts (yeast)
you did were interesting.

Why don't you consider using some kind of heat source, like an aquarium heater inside a jar or something. If you use the search option you'll find an interesting threat by searching with "The problem of heat". If i can remember Anno showed us two overlaped rubbermaid bins with water between them and a aquarium heater, that was for an incubator, but i'm thinking about adapting and transforming that design and make a terrarium out of it, it's very easy, instead of jars, put 2" perlite, 1" h2o2+h20 (1:9 ratio), a transparent cover (the top must allow light to reach the interior) and an air pump(could be potional), cakes inside and lets rock!!!

Peace,
MAIA

Yeah, I saw a description of that incubator. I believe it
was by Roadkill. That would solve my incubation temp
issue. As far as the fruiting chamber, I don't really have
an issue with temps too much (yet). Right now in Chicago
we have temps in the teens (nice spring weather). My
landlord is always messing with the heat (bless his heart)
and he rarely gets it "right". I adjust the level in here by
cracking windows or turning on the stove, and I can pretty
much maintain between 68 and 78 degrees. That seems
o.k. for fruiting but not incubating. However, after spring
Chicago is notorious for hellish summers. THAT might be
a problem. I'm hoping to finish growing this batch before
the heatwave comes (or perhaps it won't come this year-
you never can tell here) So, your idea is interesting. Perhaps
some modifications for high external temps- maybe venting
a small air-conditioner to the fruiting chamber- are in order.
I doubt if I'm gonna go that far - but never say never.
Anyway, thanks for the input (and the search idea- I'm
fairly new at computers too).

HOLY FUCKIN' SHIT!!!  Those Maz jars are FLYING through
colonization!  The other jars are almost ready to birth!  Yeah!!
And I noc'ed up 17 jars of Hawaiian and there takin' off like
gangbusters (a colloqial expression from here) too!!  I think
the difference is from when I moved 'em into my bedroom and
put 'em next to the radiator there.  Heat IS important!  Of
course the UNTAPE and FLIP tek turned around those other jars
from the get-go.

Peace out:crazy:

zenthor, did you notice that this thread is five years old? the last post was in 2002.

anyways, if you have a contam problem you'll want to post it in the contamination forum. a picture really helps.

the mycelium is greyish? mycelium should be fluffy white. if your jar is some other color, it probably got contaminated somewhere along the line. i might wait it out another week or two and see what happens. but remember, if your jar turns black, through the whole thing out or at least dump the black stuff outside, downwind from you. apparently black mold is the kind that will kill you. good luck.
