It's 18 minutes long... educational towards the beginning, interesting in the middle, and enlightening towards the end... and then overwhelmingly beautiful to the point that you want to tear up at the very end. I thought that I was re-living my last journey on magic mushrooms when I was watching this. What do you all think?

amazing.

what she describes sounds like ego death. is it a justified conclusion to say that one of the major effects of psychedelics is just to turn off the left hemisphere of the brain? 
And did I understand correctly that she can still go in and out of the oneness-experience? or did she mean that more philosophically.

interesting that she uses a left brain right brain pop psychology bunko theory to hold herself together in a pinch.
that is akin to faith in god or shiva.
but you gotta love her spirit - that is really what this is about!
scraping through and living to tell the story!
I wish she had a clearer perception of what her brain does, because of the whole "I am a neurologist and I'm telling you the truth!" podium aspect of it.
suppose it does not make a whit of difference to the lay crowd.
I have even less faith in neurologists after this.

That study has been disproven over and over again by modern neurological research.  The findings in the split-brain study were highly preliminary, yet they were grabbed by the popular press & publicized as though they were conclusive.

There is a HUGE difference between examining the neurological functions of an intact brain & examining the functions of someone whose corpus collosum has been severed.  Now that we have the capability to study the brain in action, we know that the strict left/right assignments of functionality were flawed.

Jill Taylor video made me think that not all insights can be gathered in this state of mind. It is interesting to dissociate which insights can versus which cannot. This dissociation will give us some clues on the nature of this experience and its limits. Do you know if they are studies which focus on the nature of insights perceived under LSD? shrooms?

Reading this forum, LSD allows to take distance to social rules and norms. Did anyone experienced the same with mathematical rules? (for example having the feeling that 1+1=5). Or with something intermediate between social and maths?

unless there were a philosophical truth for 1+1 = 5

we would be talking about impairing cognitive abilities to remember language sytax and logical order and i do not think anyone would encounter that

they may not feel inclined to do or remember math for a while but at the same time i cannot see that this even remotely applies

because social rules and norms are fictional entities that are not based in any way on ration or reason

LSd purges the mind of conditioning and puts it in a state of child-like receptivity wherein new patterns can be noticed within what is normally rigidly defended as already "known"

great scientific minds have given LSD credit for giving them revelations.

the problem with concepts like shiva, krisna, god, whatever is that it's easy to forget what they are: concepts, nothing more than symbols pointing to the indescribable.
but isn't neurology in a different order? it describes things actually happening in the brain. I agree that you shouldn't put too much focus on it, because the experience is what counts.
but if she knows what happens in the brain during this experience, then i'm interested as well.  but in a different way then that i'm interested in the philosophical/mystical/holistic/whatever meaning of it all.

the buddha found out by experience (meditating) that everything is made up of tiny particles, constantly coming into being and disapearing again really quickly.
2000 years later, someone built a machine that proved the same thing (atoms disapearing and reappearing, he won the nobelprize for that). but that didn't get him enlightened!
so although neurologists can know a lot about how the brain works, that doesn't make them any wiser. as long as they don't act that way, i don't see the problem.

A is assumed. 1A + 1A = 2A. The equation 1+1=2 is valid only to section of our environment where A is constant.

sometimes it makes them less wise

think about how blind the DSM-IV makes you, it has so much knowledge that some completely rely on it, and cannot see beyond the confines of the book

its why, its not about knowledge, its about knowing

its about experiencing

if you tell someone the universe is made of particles, this doesn't turn them into a Buddha, or anything compassionate

but if they SEE with their EYE(S) the unity of all things, and watch a great vision and understanding of how all life is ONE and precious

then that changes them deeply

and if they just go tell you about it, it doesn't help you, unless they can take you to drink of the waters, and you drink.

In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance it is ntoed that todays "atoms" and "molecules" are no different than yesterdays "ghosts" and "spirits"
it is just a different angle and a different level of language intricacies held together by observations

yet, the observations depend upon the observer. it is a wonderful read.

I think we are going to have to have a war on strokes. If we allow people to have the freedom to experience their minds without the binds we tie through them, clearly our human agenda will be demolished in favor of evil.

The only solution is to set up a massive agency with which we can incarcerate all individuals who experience stroke induced revelations (of evil).
