EQ & PESA *COMPLETED* LOG (start to finish w/pics)
    #857747 - 09/01/02 08:50 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Grow log Nr1
This is a grow log that my cat did while vacationing in Bermuda. Started on around July 25, 2002. This is the FIRST time my cat has ever used straw and poo, she is very pleased with the results so far.

First she inoculates:
2 Half Pint EQ cakes.
2 Half Pint PESA cakes.

These cakes were kept at 83F and 88rh. The jars fully colonized in around 10-14 days, she then waited an additional five days before spawning.

Aug 11, 2002: My cat then pasteurized (40 Minutes @ 165F) a pillow case full of:
80% Wheat Straw
20% Sheep Poo

The straw&poo was then left in the sink to drain for 60 minutes.
It was then loaded into two large spawn bags. One of the bags was spawned with 2 EQ cakes, the other was spawned with the two PESA cakes. The spawn bags were then impulse sealed shut. The bags were incubated at 80F and 70rh.

Aug. 17, 2002: The spawn bags are 90% colonized. The mycelium loves sheep poo!!!

Aug 19, 2002: The spawn bags are completely colonized and ready to be cased. My cat them PC?d two quart jars full of coir. She has recently started getting cobweb mold on her coir casings so shes trying to be extra careful nowadays. She then cut open the spawn bags and evenly distributed the sheep poo and Wheat straw in 2 garden type plastic pots (18 inch long, 6 inch deep, 5 inch wide). Each pot was given a substrate layer of 4 inches. Next, she put a 1inch 100% coir casing layer on the EQ spawn and a 1 inch 50/50 (Coir & Verm) casing layer on the PESA spawn. These were incubated at 80F 75rh.

Aug 21, 2002 : Small spots of mycelium has poked through the casing layer on both casings. Coco coir was used to patch these spots.

Aug 22, 2002 : The casing?s are moved to the refrigerator in order to cold shock for twelve hours.

Aug 23, 2002 : The casings are placed in their fruiting chamber. This chamber is a 30 gallon Sterlite container. My cat has cut a rectangular hole in the lid and has tapped a piece of plexi-glass in order to let light in. There is a two foot florescent light that rests on the lid (the light is on a 6 hour on 6 hour off timer which does this twice a day). The chamber has 5 small holes filled with polyfil which let out CO2. There is also a duel aquarium air pump which is connected two 2 H2o2 bottles, these bottles have an air stone connected inside them which blow humid and sterile air into the chamber at all time. The fruiting chamber has an ulra sonic humidifier which is on a timer for 6 times a day for 5 minutes each cycle. The h2o2 bottles and air pump keeps the humidity in the upper 80?s low 90?s, the ultra sonic humidifier is hooked up so my cat doesn?t physically do any misting J

Aug25th, 2002 : Mycelium is poking through the casing layers on both casings. The mycelium is colonizing pretty evenly. Many fanning sessions have taken place (5+).

Aug27th, 2002: Knots are forming all both casings. The 100% coir has the best amount of knots. The camera used doesn?t have a very good zoom so no pics were taken.

Aug29th, 2002 : Many pins are on both casings. The 50/50 (PESA) casing is showing more pins then the 100% coir casing. Humidity is dropped to around 85-87%.

Aug30th, 2002 :

Aug31st, 2002: Pins maturing.

In their chamber.

Sept1st, 2002 : Here are the casings at 2AM.

11AM

EQ

Printing:

Drying : All mushrooms are dried in a food dehydrator. The dehydrator has an adjustable heater which is usually turned all the way off or very low.

The PESAs are turning VERY blue:

I will put up pics of any other flushes that may come. Please post feedback and comments.

Why spawn your substrate in a bag??
Why not just spawn it in the fruiting trays?? That way you don`t have to still break it up and wait for recovery of the mycelium??
why not make more prints??

i like the way you break your cakes, you put them in a zip lock bag first. as for printing on foil. how do you scrape the spores off? if you use a scalpel or knife wont the foil tear very easy. finaly, it looks like you used more straw then pooh, am i right.

DERRAYLD, I use spawn bags because its easy to know when the spawn is FULLY colonized.  It is also less proned to contams because of the filter patch.  I also have two aluminum trays that I use to make glass slide prints, I have ALOT right now .

I did use more straw then poop.  It is a 80% straw 20% sheep poo substrate.

Fd, Im not sure of the wet weight, I will know the dry weight of the first flush around tonight or tomorrow.

this is a beautiful log. i may use your H2O2 + fish pump idea. do you mix H2o2 and water? Also, i didn't see anything pertaining to temperature control....i may have overlooked it i'm in a bit of a hurry...i was thinking of using a small fan fitted with filter patch and hooked up to an AC/DC converter for air exchange. i am thinking of filling the bottom of my fruiting/incubation chamber with H2o2/water heated by fish heater...any suggestions? Again....very cool log...

vaporbrains, yes I use H2O2 and water with the air pump (usually a 10:1 ratio).  I use to heat my incubation with a fish heater with water and H2O2 but it got to be a hassle changing out the water.  Now I just use a sterlite container on its own, the temps are lower but when your working with straw and sheep poo the mycelium rips through it even at low temps.  That fan idea you have sounds good, I'm old fashioned when it comes to fanning, I just use a paper plate heh-heh .

very nice log.  Looks like you'll have plenty to eat.
I imagine you innoculated with syringes?  Were (are) you using a HEPA for the spawn transfer to the
bags or just open air?  The spawn bag ease of observation is an excellent point.
    continued success to you

Well shit, I'm glad to see everyone likes my log.  For whoever asked about the weight, each casing has given around 26-28 dry grams on its first flush.  I'll post pic'z of any future flushes.  This should handle my big appetite for awhile heh-heh .
