why do you think the casing on the left is doing better than the one on the right?

I never used more than 1/2 ii casing with my casings in trays. The casing depht has to match the substrate depth. there is no sense in a deep casing and a shallow substrate layer.
The casing looks dry. It should have the moisture that when you take a handfull and squeeze, some drops of water come out, if working with peat. With coco coir casing it can be a little moister.
After the casing is applied, the casing should be covered with aluminium foil and left in a warm place for a few days, untill the mycelium begins to pop out. THEN you uncover it, spray it a little and place into terrarium.

HQ would have patch cased those 1st popups (when she followed the method anno gave here). coir also dries out easily- that light so close to the casing layer may not be helping you (and, why light? or is it just on for the picture?)

Anno do you ever have problems with your casings getting contams that way? I just tried that exact same method you described, verbatim, and got nothing but cobweb mold, what?s the trick here man? I was totally anal with sterilty and everything...
don?t get it...

oscill-yes, the light is only used for pics and will be on a timer later one the mycelial network is fully extablished in the casing.
anno-i was wrong, yes the casing layer is less than the substrate layer by about 1/4-1/2 inch. it does seem a little dry, but im afraid i will fuck it up if i mist it.
