I never used more than 1/2 ii casing with my casings in trays. The casing depht has to match the substrate depth. there is no sense in a deep casing and a shallow substrate layer.

The casing looks dry. It should have the moisture that when you take a handfull and squeeze, some drops of water come out, if working with peat. With coco coir casing it can be a little moister.

After the casing is applied, the casing should be covered with aluminium foil and left in a warm place for a few days, untill the mycelium begins to pop out. THEN you uncover it, spray it a little and place into terrarium.

HQ would have patch cased those 1st popups (when she followed the method anno gave here). coir also dries out easily- that light so close to the casing layer may not be helping you (and, why light? or is it just on for the picture?)

Anno do you ever have problems with your casings getting contams that way? I just tried that exact same method you described, verbatim, and got nothing but cobweb mold, what?s the trick here man? I was totally anal with sterilty and everything...

oscill-yes, the light is only used for pics and will be on a timer later one the mycelial network is fully extablished in the casing.

anno-i was wrong, yes the casing layer is less than the substrate layer by about 1/4-1/2 inch. it does seem a little dry, but im afraid i will fuck it up if i mist it.

you are approaching overlay, you want pinning while the caseing can still serve a purpose.

overlay is when the mycelium on your casings become thick and matted... Basically means that it can?t pin because there?s too much shit on top.

someone refine that answer... I?ve never had overlay, so I can?t give a real succinct answer.

oh ok.

i dunno about coldshocking... I?ve heard alot for and alot against it... Mostly i?ve heard that if you have patience you?ll have the same results as cold-shocking it.

on a side note.. I also heard on some post a while ago that cubes should never have to be cold shocked. Can anyone address this?

I Have An EQ Lump.. i say lump because It?s not really a casing.. It?s just 3 cakes crumbled directly onto the perilite in the terrarium and covered like a baseball mound with coco fiber. I It has been 4 days and it?s about 1/2 completely covered with mycelium. I started to introduce light on day 3.. Which is probably when you should have. It definitely looks like you are going to have some harsh overlay If you just now gave light... usually by day 8 after starting a casing I always have small mushrooms or at least pins.

Overlay sucks dude, i can tell you that. If no pins are seen, consider on making a deep scratch on the overlay and cold shock on refrigerator for 8-12 hours, altough cold shock is not really needed with cubes it will help ease your mind.
Pinning=High humidity+lots of fresh air+light.

Peace,
MAIA

don?t expect pinning immediately.. depending on what strain your growin you could be waiting at least 10 days for pins.. by then the overlay will be very prominent.

Dude calm down...go back to the basics, your casing is just a water delivery device. Right now the best thing for those is just plain old simple water. Overlay is what happens when the top gets all matted and your water delivery device fails, you get pooling, and eventually bacteria. Just scratching through the mat to allow water penetration will resolve that. (make sure you sterilize your scratching instrument)
If I were you I?d put a little bit more casing over the thicker parts (a little less than 1/4") and give it a good soakdown with a spray bottle, and wait 3 days.
trust me.

I would consider your light...

make it so it more closely simulates a day.

mine go 8-10 hours on.

I havn?t had pinning on my cakes for 10 days... but i do have mycelium reaching up into the air... I?m hoping it?ll pin soon. I?ve heard it could take as long as 3 weeks.

when you scratch, i am of the understanding that you have to put a thin layer of coir on top, cover it all up, and let it colonize again.

that just what i?ve gotten to know though.

Why would that make any difference?
If you have a cake growing.. when you case you break it up and it gows back together.. basically like another cake .. but with more nutrients.. so if anything casing would make any strain grow better

Can someone advised as to how to spray the castings? I?m more familaur with the PF TEK, however I have recently seen my buds trays that look like yours EXCEPT the top is very very dry with the mycelrium poping thru in a few spots. At first they were kept in the dark and started to develop cobweb mold... So an aquraium light was left on for 24 hours. this killed the cobweb mold dead in it?s tracks. However the tops are now as dry as sand! The white fungus still looks pretty healthy with spots bigger than a US quarter. Does one just spray a fine mist of water onto the dry areas, or does one spray the entire top- fungus and all? Thanks.

to my understanding there would be less nutrients because casing layers are nutrient free (that?s to my understanding because I believe that coco coir has no nutrients)

Casing makes most strains grow better, but with MR and PF it causes it to produce far too many pins. So many that the mycelium can?t provide enough water/nutrients to all of them, so that most, if not all, abort. I?m not a bad grower (if I do say so myself;) but casings I?ve made of MR and PF have produced an average of 2 or 3 fully developed fruits. Along with zillions of aborts. For example....

That?s the only mature fruit this casing produced.

about pf & casings... pf?s also have been grown out by fanaticus time and time again using pf cakes- fruited off cakes. not varying the repetoire to include casing can prompt the strain to be apt to fruit "best" on cakes... lesser on casings. also- pf?s been working with that strain for *quite* a long time, not a bash, but sometimes degeneration occurs over several years of a particular strain when grown in exactly the same coditions, on the same substrate, etc. and finally, pf?s are known to be those fat asses you see... just a trait of the strain...

hehe.. cdc, give it time. and drink a blue hawaii for me too... ::grin::

jammer- i dont know if bill answered you and deleted the answer? but you can *lightly* spray casings (not casting- castings are worm poo... unless youre using worm poo for casing?) thru the colonization period of the casing layer until you see pinning. then stop. spraying pins can lead to abhorts (so can pf strain...). dont drown the mycelia of the casing layer... just do it lightly so theres no standing water on the mycelia/casing material.

ps- my comments on the pf strain is not me saying pf sucks (actually HQ just got a syringe from pf the other day)...

True. I often don?t have time(and lust) to elaborate on every question. That?s why I went with CdC on this one and left others(him) to reply it.
Another example of the PFstrain giving too many pins:

Yea, the pins that have the black heads are basicly dieing. If they are harvested BEFORE the heads turn black, by weight they are said to be even stronger than the sporocarps (regular size ?shroom). I recomend harvesting the little disformed pins both for the buzz and the belife that this can possible encourage the regular ?shrooms to emerge sooner.

I hate to say this....

But I told ya so! (I bet that your glad now that you didnt throw the trays out eh?) Thats just the way the PF strain does. It allmost allways starts out with a zillion aborts (deformed looking pins) before the "sporocarps" kick in. Your trays are looking awesome, and I belive that the best is yet to come.

it still looks dry as shit man, it?s susposed to be moist. I wonder if the surface was moist maybe the deformed shrooms/fatheads/abhorts would be reduced a little bit.

Yea, if those are truly the main PF strain something is up. The aborts really were typical of the PF strain.... Im curious as to what the temps are....

These latest pics remind me a little of PESA HAWAIAN.

yeah, I think his casing are way to dry, and possibly not enough air circulation, that?s only the first flush and the casing has already seperated from the side of the container, i?m interested in seeing how the next flush turns out.

Great job!
Personally I think you have good air-circulation, judging on how you have done in the past week or so. And don?t worry about that shrinkage, it always happens when a casing does good.
If I were you I?d be taking some prints. Then I?d pick that casing clean. and give it another GOOD soaking with the spray bottle.
Onward!

a hydroponics store near where i live, they had it in a compacted brick that you soak in water and it expands.

I?ve heard its when the veil is about to break or just breaking because thats when the mushroom stops making more psilocybin.. so thats when it has the best potency:mass ratio.

I?ll further expand my question, where would I go to buy the ingredients to make coco coir and the ingredients into making a wonderful casing as this.

thx

you buy a coco coir brick at your local hydroponics store, just add water, and follow hongus? casing tek using moist (not wet) coco coir instead of vericulite.

seems you were hesitant to mist the casings, or add extra moisture/ water.

Why was that?

Is there any reasons why you didn?t want to add extra water even tho they were looking dry? I sprayed mine regulary, sometimes saturated them, if i thought they had been dry for a few days. Is that bad, or were you just seeing what happened if you didn?t add extra water?

Anyway, congrats man nice grow. If that was your first grow, which if i recall you said it was at the top, then double congrats due, if i am mistaken don?t worry you can keep the double blessing haha

Day 27 - after a while of nothing but tiny aborts, some more big healthy shrooms are growing again. i hope this flush is as huge as my previous ones...

BTW, in my previous flushes i have harvested a total of approx. 24 grams dry, not too shabby or a first try!

what things are you going to do differntly on your next go around with casings? like what mistakes did you learn from that you won?t do again..

just curious.

    #458576 - 11/14/01 08:06 PM (22 years, 24 days ago)

There were a lot of items discussed in this thread?I will try to summarize with my two cents. I saw a lot of advice from people who are obviously regurgitating shit they read without understanding what the hell they were talking about?Others who had good advice. Here is what I thought:

Moisture

I begin seeing problems in the day 5 pics. The casing layer is already too dry. It is critical to keep the casing misted in the early stages of colonization. This is the time best for being able to water the casing without spraying directly onto any (or very little) mycelium. The more moisture you keep during this time, the less misting you will need later when the casing is pinning and fruiting. Allowing it to get dry early will cause you to have to mist frequently even while fruiting if you are going to keep things remotely moist. This results in matting of the mycelium during colonization and/or abhorting of the pins during fruiting. Anno described the moisture of the coir for you. His advice comes from hands on experience. You should able to squeeze a little water out of coir when it is applied. I agree that the casings should be covered with foil until they are colonized enough to initiate pinning. This MAY pose a risk if you are not sterilizing your coir. The increased CO2 present when covered will initiate faster colonizing of the casing but will also be a better habitat for contams like cobweb. I would at least microwave the coir in a Tupperware if nothing else.

Misting

When you mist you want your sprayer on the finest mist it can provide. Hold the bottle basically upright or just slightly pointed down. Do your fanning before misting. Hold the bottle about 1-2 feet above the casing and mist. Allow the fine mist to settle down upon the casing layer instead of spraying directly on it. You may need to pull the trigger 2 or 3 times but just get a light moistening and stop. If your casing layer does not have mycelium coming through yet and it is dry, you can mist all at once. Mist coir until it first turns dark brown again. When you see it starting to lighten up?it?s drying out. If you do not see mycelium for several days you have probably got it too wet?.stop misting and give air exchange?coir dries out quick. If you have mycelium coming through large portions of the casing, it will take you a few mistings to get the moisture content back up. Do this with several small mistings spread out over the course of a day. Open the terrarium mist lightly as described above. Pay special attention to the mycelium patches. If you can see ?dew? starting to form on any of the mycelium stop misting for now and wait. After about 4-6 hours you should be able to mist again. Again do not allow too much dew to collect on the mycelium. Re-hydrating a casing in this manner can be a little tedious but will pay off versus: 1. being too dry -or- 2. misting all at once and casing matting of the mycelium. It will pay off in the long run. Again, try to keep your casing from getting to this point by maintain your moisture early.

Overlay

Overlay is over colonization of the casing layer. Overlay is undesirable because it does not leave enough uncolonized, moist casing to cover the mycelium. This defeats the purpose of having casing. The least amount of mycelium showing to give an even pinset is optimum. On to the issue of you scratching this casing?I would not have scratched that casing after you had already initiated fruiting. Hyphal knots were no doubt forming and you destroyed many of them. Ironically, this may have helped you in the case of the PF strain. It may well have relieved some of the over-pinning problem. You left plenty of hyphal knots that developed into healthy pins but I suspect the sparse regions of your casing layer were places that unknowingly got more scratching than other parts. The pins you did get did not tend to abhort because there was plenty of mycelium and moisture to develop them into full grown mushies. I cannot believe the insane pinning in that pic Anno posted of that casing?I have had over pinning with EQs?but I have never seen anything like that! With most other strains I would suggest covering those heavily colonized parts of the casing with more coir. Leave valleys in the uncolonized areas and allow the mycelium to catch up. You want to see a little mycelium evenly protruding over the entire area of the casing rather than dense colonization in only a few areas or most of the area. Or if you have excessive matting as a result of overlay, scratch and place another thin layer of casing on top wait a few days until it colonizes and then initiate fruiting. Don?t scratch after you have initiated fruiting.

so you think i should have initiated pinning with these casings on day 6, or earlier?

They day 8 pics would be about where I would start the light. Day 9 already looks too far. This is where the patching of the early spots helps.

You got too much mycelium showing in the dense spots. Placing little casing hills in those areas so less area is showing will help the mycelium remain moist.

BTW those are some ugly looking contams. The green shit with the white edges is Trichoderma, the brown shit is Botrytis I believe and the grey fuzz is cobweb or perhaps just whispy mycelium...that pic is kinda blurry. The trichoderma no doubt came from the unsterilized coir. It shows up over night in the huge patches like that. It is fierce on your mycelium and mushies!

Try adding some lime to the coco fiber to raise the ph and keep in mind trich is most likely coming from you when you are playing with your casings.

Nice pics BTW.

False. The trich is most likely comming from your unsterilzed coco fiber.

Lime is not a bad idea though. The higher pH will discourage trich as well as cobweb.

Lime: Home Dept in gardening section in a fairly small yellow bag.
Lime:Casing ratio as stated by ralphster is 1:4
Right now i?m using this mix as a casing layer, but it gives the coir a weird texture and is fairly grey in color (if you mix it into already hydrated coir). I think you should disolve the lime first in boiling water and then throw in the dehydrated coir brick. this should cause the coir to suck up all the high ph lime water without coating the outsides in the powder.

Make sure to use Hydrated lime, any other kinds of lime will burn the mycelium.

Actually limestone(CaCO3) is what you want.

Read http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/lime/lime.html.

do you really need lime, or will using boiling water to hydrate the coir take care of trich?

I used crushed oyster shell, it works great, but lime would work just as well I would think. I?d pressure cook Sir Tokes, boiling isn?t sufficent enough.

I pasteurize my casing mix allready brought to the right moisture content in the microwave at high for 10 minutes in a covered bowl or plastic bag.
