Try adding some lime to the coco fiber to raise the ph and keep in mind trich is most likely coming from you when you are playing with your casings.

Nice pics BTW.

False. The trich is most likely comming from your unsterilzed coco fiber.

Lime is not a bad idea though. The higher pH will discourage trich as well as cobweb.

Lime: Home Dept in gardening section in a fairly small yellow bag.
Lime:Casing ratio as stated by ralphster is 1:4
Right now i?m using this mix as a casing layer, but it gives the coir a weird texture and is fairly grey in color (if you mix it into already hydrated coir). I think you should disolve the lime first in boiling water and then throw in the dehydrated coir brick. this should cause the coir to suck up all the high ph lime water without coating the outsides in the powder.

Make sure to use Hydrated lime, any other kinds of lime will burn the mycelium.

Actually limestone(CaCO3) is what you want.

Read http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/lime/lime.html.

do you really need lime, or will using boiling water to hydrate the coir take care of trich?

I used crushed oyster shell, it works great, but lime would work just as well I would think. I?d pressure cook Sir Tokes, boiling isn?t sufficent enough.

>or will using boiling water to hydrate the coir take care of trich?

I pasteurize my casing mix allready brought to the right moisture content in the microwave at high for 10 minutes in a covered bowl or plastic bag.
