OK, let's define "I" as the ability to experience. Is our ability to experience lessened by injury to our brain? Yes. As this is the case, how would our ability to experience continue once brain function ceases?

So, yes, the cessation of "I" means cessation of all experience, all awareness AND cessation of identification with an individual organism, since all of these abilities hinge on having a functioning brain.

The problem with claiming that there is equal (absence) of evidence for and against life after death is that one cannot prove a negative. What evidence would there be that life after death does not occur?

The fact that there is NO credible evidence that suggests our consciousness continues on without a brain, and AMPLE evidence which shows that our consciousness is impacted by injury to our brain, indicates to me that "I" will cease to exist when my brain ceases to function. This is the only explanation which is not based upon wishful thinking, mythology and avoidance of death anxiety.

I just run into a roadblock when I try to imagine what it would be like to, quite literally, vanish from all existence, to turn into nothing, forever. It doesn't seem possible to me.

It could be that my brain (as anyone else's) is simply hardwired to fight death tooth and nail, though.

No one is fully rational nor fully irrational; however, people who believe in life-after-death are certainly not using 'thinking' (as in logical evaluation) to arrive at this conclusion.

Any close examination reveals the flaws in such beliefs.

I see. So you are saying the brain is synonymous with the mind? Are they existentially inseparable, but analytically distinct?

Mind
The human consciousness that originates in the brain and is manifested especially in thought, perception, emotion, will, memory, and imagination.

Brain
The portion of the vertebrate central nervous system that is enclosed within the cranium, continuous with the spinal cord, and composed of gray matter and white matter. It is the primary center for the regulation and control of bodily activities, receiving and interpreting sensory impulses, and transmitting information to the muscles and body organs. It is also the seat of consciousness, thought, memory, and emotion.

They sound fairly inseparable to me.

My argument is as follows:

Imagine somehow (in paradox) a "rational" discourse between nonexistent, nonliving voices.

To have one voice convince the other not only of existence, but of life and consciousness through rational thought is impossible.

Nothing does not exist. Nonexistence does not exist because it cannot be experienced.

Can you imagine an experience without (capability for) memory?

Your spirit can leave your body. Do this and you'll see there is existence after death, but it is not a cognitive existence - cognition brings one back to the body. In the event that the body is dead, there is no possibility for cognition. It's kind of like there's a non-ego singularity, think of the world as a life factory with no one home. There's no 'out there' or 'in there' there's only the play that's occurring.

Wherever the hero may wander, whatever he may do, he is ever in the presence of his own essence — for he has the perfected eye to see. There is no separateness. Thus, just as the way of social participation may lead in the end to a realization of the All in the individual, so that of exile brings the hero to the Self in all.

'Seeing' is a form of cognition. Try to actually make sense.

Nonexistence does not exist because it cannot be experienced.

Do you sometimes sleep through the night without dreaming??

Well with no memory of anything for 8 hours... I feel you get a sense of what nonexistence would be like.
Just that you would never wake up and be able to reflect on the 'missing time'.
