Partial brain injury vs. total brain injury
    #8459930 -

Most non-thinkers agree that a brain damaged either through age or injury has a reduced function that directly affects the way an indivudal perceives and acts in the world.

Yay! The nutjobs and the rationalists are in accord.

Then some of the non-thinkers will go on to say that a fully damaged brain (i.e. a dead one) has total healthy function. The dead person can ask themselves what happened and where they are and take a look at their surroundings until such time as a superior being comes to explain things to them and their fully damaged brain can process this new information.

Fantasy sure is fun!

Non-thinkers?

Your OP reads suspiciously like a straw man. I wonder how many "non-thinkers" would agree with you.

I just mention this since reading here I seem to detect two "sides" if you will, rationalists and, well, non-rationalists.

Would you consider your post a straw man? Or do you think it actually represents the ideas of the ones you label "non-thinkers"?

No one is fully rational nor fully irrational; however, people who believe in life-after-death are certainly not using 'thinking' (as in logical evaluation) to arrive at this conclusion.

Any close examination reveals the flaws in such beliefs.

Here's my rational for life after death.

Life is too beautiful and complex to simply end.

How's that for rational?

That is poetic. Now look up the word 'rational' before your next post.

...because we have so many examples of beautiful and complex things lasting forever?   What about ugly and simple things...why do they get the shaft?

Everyone dies. They don't come back. It seems like the end to me.

Life doesn't end just because you do. The universe doesn't revolve around us.

Isn't the answer obvious?

Well, I guess I could understand wanting ugly things to die and not come back, but what's wrong with simple?

'What about ugly and simple things...why do they get the shaft?'

Because, we went over this...  Humans don't live forever.

I care for other living things. I call this my soul. I believe my soul to be independent from my biological body. I believe when I die, my soul has some time in another world, dimension, heaven - call it whatever. Then when my time to enter the physical world comes, I'm reincarnated into life, forgetting everything I learned in my past lives, at least on the surface.

If you want to believe nothing happens after you die, as I once did for many years, you lose a certain immortality which can make us braver, stronger people.

Why do you believe this? What convinced you that this was true, despite contradictory evidence?

If it is not true, what benefit is there to encouraging delusion when we could be embracing the brief lifetime we are given?

You are entitled to whatever nonsensical beliefs you can conjure up, but to pretend that they are rational is, well... irrational.

So now you compound your foolishness by stating another non-fact: that silly beliefs make one stronger? Just like your cosmic beliefs, I am certain you have no factual basis for this wild assertion.

Really, I feel that it would be both brave and strong for humans to admit that we are here for a blink of an eye and we don't necessarily move on at all.
I like immortality...  But I feel that when death takes you those white lights/angels/voices are a dying mind dreaming its belief and hope into existence at the last moment.
Suppose its as real as any other psychedelic experience.

There's as much evidence FOR life after death as there is AGAINST it. That is to say: absolutely none.

I reserve judgment on the matter until I die and I can know for sure. In the meantime I tend to lean towards thinking death is not the end, simply because I find the idea of permanent, eternal nothingness so utterly incomprehensible.

The problem with claiming that there is equal (absence) of evidence for and against life after death is that one cannot prove a negative. What evidence would there be that life after death does not occur?

The fact that there is NO credible evidence that suggests our consciousness continues on without a brain, and AMPLE evidence which shows that our consciousness is impacted by injury to our brain, indicates to me that "I" will cease to exist when my brain ceases to function. This is the only explanation which is not based upon wishful thinking, mythology and avoidance of death anxiety.

How do we define the cessation of "I"? Is it the cessation of ALL experience, ALL awareness, or the cessation of identification with an individual organism?
