Morels
    #8234628 -

So hunting for early erm, nonedibles, ive come across at least three Morels in late march. i havent gone back to the site since its been raining all week and i hafta wade through a creek to get there, and was wondering if anyone knows how these species react to rain as far as fruiting.

also, can i collect spores like i would a "regular" mushroom cap on paper? i wouldnt think its needed since this is the "white" variety of morel and it doesnt look like any of the toxic false morels, but if i find more than i will use i might want to do that just to verify for others.

I'm pretty sure a couple warm days after a rain is a good time to hunt morels.

not sure about a print.

a print really isnt needed for id of morels. false morels are red not black, grey, yellow, or white. so just dont eat any red ones although many people do with no ill effect. i dont recomend it but if you do eat the red ones make sure you cook them very well. i dont know for sure but toxicity varies by region so i just dont eat them

yeah i've taken prints from morels before you do it like regular except i cut it in half because the whole cap is spore bearing than i just put the halfs with ridges face down, it usually produces some heavy prints.

Well if you are wanting the spores for use in inoculating jars or growing/culturing or spawn, you absolutely can not do it like the other
mushrooms, because morels will have mucor mold growing on them along with their spores and spores of other contaminates. The best way to get
morel spores from a mature specimen is by having the morel eject its spores upward on to some plastic wrap, saran wrap and make sure not to allow the mushroom to touch the plastic. If you allow it to drop spores down you will find that the morel mushroom in an enclosed container or even wrapped with plastic or whatever, will turn to goo it will melt in other words, and with that melting it drips a lot of moisture loss from the mushroom tissue, and along with that a lot of contaminates and their spores. And if you can't get the mushroom to eject spores then you managed to get an immature specimen that wasn't ready yet. Your best chance is to get a really large sized morel, this would indicate that it has been around for a while to grow so large and usually these large ones are ready to produce spores.
So you will have to enclose it with plastic wrap but you can not use anything that falls, only what has been ejected upward onto the plastic
wrap, and yes its a destructive process that will result in the mushroom
turning to goo. The humidity and warmth of the season for some reason
stimulates their release. What type of container you use to hold your
mushroom could be anything from a plate to a strawberry container crate
like the ones at the grocery store that hold a pint of strawberries.

DO NOT "put the halfs with ridges face down" THAT IS INCORRECT

so how do i know if the morels are too old to eat? i went back and there were TONS more but they were all a yellowish color, and much less firm than previous samples.

i made the prints, but never used them i'll throw them out today, and try it your way. thanks for the input.

Look on the pit edges. When the pit edges on the cap start to darken, snag them up.

Anyone tried cloning a morel?
Live tissue to agar or into LC?
I've cloned commercial Enokie from the grocery store before by splitting them and getting inner tissue.
the stem was less than 1/8th thick so a morel could be cloned too I think.
I may have to do it under a microscope though.
Morel flesh is pretty thin.

Morels are easy to clone on agar. Never use a lc for cloning any mushroom.

Not with a Morel you haven't.

In a liquid culture it can be tough to distinguish the mycelium of the prefered species from other, contaminant cultures. With agar you don't run the risk of innoculating your grains the wrong (or multiple) organisms. If the agar is contaminated you can still save the culture by transfering to another dish

Morels are absolutely delicious. I usually go hunting for them every year, although I haven't seen a decent crop of them since 2001.

It's right about morel season in my part of the US now, so I'll be looking for new spots to hunt soon.

LC is perfect for cloning!
If you've had specific problems cloning morels in LC say so, but considering how many tissue clones I have in LC right now I have to disagree.
I test every LC on agar or BRF before I go big with it.
Yeah contams can hide in it but that's no reason to abandon LC for cloning.
You can do everything but isolate sectors with LC.
A contamed LC looks like chunky crap.
not really that hard to see if it's bad.
floating islands of green....blobs of brown...anything but nice round jelly blobs like see thru cotton balls in water is probably bad.
bad just LOOKS bad.
You have to balance what you're capable of with what you can produce.
There are a thousand ways to screw up agar work to clone.
There are 500 ways to screw up LC to clone.
Agar work is in a dish with gas exchange, LC is in a sealed jar with a filter for gas exchange.
Agar cultures will crawl out of a dish and contaminate themselves. LC will run out of sugar and go to sleep.

I completely disagree. Never in a million years would one get away with cloning wild specimens in a liquid medium. The success % would be below 5% easily. Agar first, then to liquid mediums after the culture has been cleaned up.

By the way, i've cloned several mushroom strains in a liquid medium as well. But every one of them has been cubensis cultivated indoors. That's easy.

Besides that, cloning in liquid mediums is a bad idea.

your right i havent done it with a morel and to plan to but you said not to do it with any muchroom. i was just wondering why. i know you can get better results on agar by cloning several fruit at a time to determine the best one but using an LC does work quite well

sorry to double pot but ive cloned oysters tis way also id say you could have success with any mushroom grow indoors in a semi-sterile enviroment. but i know you cant do it with a wild mushroom there is just know way to isolate the desired organisim without agar
