Anyone ever see a morel do this??

On a recent foray with my dad, we found a lot of nice young morels. Since he was driving home, I had the opportunity to examine them as we went.
Well, against the dark backdrop of the front seat, I noticed these little light-colored grains that were only on the ridges of the morel, never in the honeycomb pockets. They were slightly smaller than a grain of sand, and I assumed they were just debris.
But I swear to god, these little things would pop off! I had to observe it half a dozen times or so to convince myself it wasn't just the vehicle bouncing around. I've heard the ascomyces can have projectile spores, but these little grains were much larger than any individual spore [I'd think, anyway] so maybe it is like a 'spore packet' or something?
I'm pretty convinced these things were launching the little grains. I could see a parabolic pathway, and repeated the observation several times on several fruits.
Anyone else ever seen this??

Sounds cool, do you have a video camera???
I have never seen ejection of large particles but I have seen ejction of ascospores. It is easiest to see in bright sunlight or under a lamp. Some types of cup fungi preform a massive ejection of spores when touched and it looks like a puff of smoke. The only other thing I can think is that there was particles stuck over the asci, which were blown off when the spores were ejected.
I hope you're taking prints :)

yes, please take prints. I have yellow morel, but I would love one for black. I would be glad to send a few EQ prints in trade, when my FOAF harvests them

Unfortunately, I did not print these, they went into the saute pan pretty soon after taking home.
Although I did take a clone, but I'm on a little cleanup mission after a bad transferring section. . .If I end up with it clean [again] I could send a culture. Be sure to PM me with your info.
We should be getting some new flushing after the recent rains, any advice for collecting a morel spore deposit?
I'd almost think setting the fresh specimen on a clean piece of foil, then setting another piece of foil on top of that--after 48 hours or so remove the specimen and fold up the foil. Sound good?

fast hypothesis on my part, id say you have some springtails, comonly found in the same habitat as morels and especially common in the spring. they are a tiny black-grey fuzzy insect that hops from here to there and likes moist cavernous places like decaying logs, moss, fungus, and even snow.

oh yes, they vary in color and size from smaller than a headlouse to as big as an ant, from black, to grey, and even bright yellow specimines have been observed, sometimes so numerous in local abundance that they seem to be a mold or fungus untill touched or disturbed causing them to snap out small protruting "springs" from beneith their abdomen sending them flying the farthest jumping distance of any animal for their size, even more than a flea.

Now that's an interesting thought. . .fauna. Didn't even consider that.
The only thing that comes to mind is that I have pretty good close-up vision, these definitely were not moving at all, didn't have any arthropod-type appendages. I think I'm going to have to stop by the lab on the way home after the next morel picking [it's scarcely 'hunting' anymore :) ]. Try to get it under the microscope, wet prep maybe.
Let's see if I can give an idea of the trajectory. From the point of 'launching', if it were to go off at a 45 degree angle, it would cover a horizontal distance of about 5-8 cm before coming back to the same height it launched from. Hope that makes sense.
They weren't pinging across the cab of the vehicle, anyway.
I dunno, I'll have to make a more deliberate attempt at ID'ing these things, for the other morel hunters out there, watch for those tiny specks on the morel ridges. I couldn't see the launching unless the lighting was right and the background was very dark. Couldn't see the tiny things in my dad's kitchen later.
You could be right Mitchnast.

Your suggestion of taking prints on sterile foil is a good idea.
Maybe you could try and trap the "ejecting things" in a Petri dish.
