Vista or XP

I'm about to build a new computer in the next month, and am wondering if I should just install XP on it or go ahead and try Vista...i will probably be trying to set up a triple boot in the long run, OSX, a linux flavor, and windows.
Kinda just wondering if Vista has been improved upon yet...
thanks

I'd stick with XP unless you want to play games that use DX10. You probably don't have a DX10 card anyways. I think Vista sucks, and so does XP. XP just sucks less.

Although Vista is great, it lags on a amd athlon fx-70 with 4gb of memory, i would still wait a few more years to switch to vista, win2000 ftw

I have a DX10 card, but I won't be installing Vista.
And with the way things are going, I think windows 2000 will be the pinnacle of microsoft operating systems.
Lolzors. Firefox's English dictionary suggests replacing the word "microsoft" with fascist as it's first recommendation.
Actually, it's recommending fascist and racist with each word I misspelt.

Vista may end up being the last universally adopted operating system developed by Microsoft. It's terrible.

damn...so its that bad.
I will be buying a higher end graphics card, got about 300 for that part, and an intel quad-core q6600 processor, so it would definitely handle vista, but if it sucks that bad, I will just stick with xp

It's just my personal opinion. I think it takes up too much space, uses too much memory, and doesn't add that much functionality.

To the OP: working with vista is about as desirable as cutting your own nuts off. It seems like it'd be cool at first, but it gets old REAL fast.

XP is my favorite. I'll wait a year or two to get vista, after they sort all their shit out.

If you're gonna run a windows OS go with XP. Its been by far the best for me. I haven't tried Vista yet but I've heard nothing that would make me want to!
I'm lucky to have a realative that works for MS. I can get official full-version copies of anything Microsoft makes at about 10% of retail. No fussing with cracked, downloaded copies is a good thing.

Dude I deal with vista all day and it sucks balls, we have customers bring in there vista box's and want us to install xp on it. Most of the boxes don't have any drivers for xp so there stuck with vista and the customers are usually giant assholes to begin with so I don't feel bad for them. Go with xp Pro, word is M$ extended support to 2011 for Pro.

Go with XP or Win2k even as much as a cannot stand windows those are less a pain in the arse. I personally would not worry about OSX, if you have windows and linux you'll be able to do everything you need to with bought and open source software. As for linux, there are many flavours available, too many to try, you may even want to look into BSD. Eitherway don't touch SuSE, i found it as frustrating as windows. But Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo etc and their derivatives are all worth a try until you find what you like. Depends what you're after, something easy or something complex, barebones or bloated... http://www.distrowatch.com for info about linux and bsd releases

what are you going to do with the computer, gaming? I don't think that 2000 would be able to handle a quad core, like how 98 couldn't handle a processor over 2.0 ghz, part of the M$'s planned obsolescence. You watch sp3 for xp is going to have a time bomb ticking in it oops we must have put a 1 where a 0 should have been but we don't care vista aerobullshit isn't it cool? we thought so, you should buy it against your will and do all our beta testing and make it better for everyone in 7 years while we buy more duct tape to put out next piece of shit together then we'll force that shit on you after vista has finally become somewhat stable.

Microsoft states officially:
“Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Windows XP Home are not affected by this policy as they are licensed per installation and not per processor. Windows XP Professional can support up to two processors regardless of the number of cores on the processor. Microsoft Windows XP Home supports one processor. “

If one is not doing gaming i would not even bother with Windows. Linux all the way IMO. Did not know win2k might be like that hmmm. It was always my fav version of windows. WinXP Pro for gaming for sure. Vista, yeah, flag for now. Though in saying that, linux is certainly catching up with games like Quake Wars ET being released natively. Of course, It all depends what you're into, even windows gamers enjoy Sauerbraten heh.
