Windows XP Reinstall Problem
    #5807038 - 06/30/06 03:03 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Im trying to carry out a complete reinstall of Windows XP, one that restores everything to factory settings.
This is the message that I get when I run the reinstall:

The following list shows the exsisting partitions and unpartitioned space on the computer.

To set up Windows XP on selected item press ENTER
To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C

To delete the selected partition press D

(19540 MB Disk 0 at 0)

C: Partition 1 [NTFS] 38154 (28735 MB free)
Unpartitioned space 8mb

(When I try to delete the exisiting partiton I get this: )

The Setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the selected partition. This partition contains temporary setup files that are required to complete the installation.

To continue press enter.

How the hell do I get around this?

If it matters the version is XP Home Edition.
I'm not trying to upgrade or anything - Its my girlfriends and she let it get trojaned and malwared up.
They disabled Cnt Alt Dlt so it was making things difficult.

I'm just trying to reinstall the same version by deleting the partition but I get the error I posted earlier.

Anyone ever had this happen or read about it and know what to do?

Did you put the xp cd in during windows and started it that way or did you boot off the CD?

(To boot off cd, tap ESC when you first turn on computer and pick CD ROM)

I have had this problem on many of occasions. For me its when i try to format by running the cd via windows. I don't see why they give you the option for a clean install when it doesn't have the ability to do so.

So yeah, just boot straight from the CD on boot up, that should fix the problem.
