Vista does use a lot of space, but who cares. Are you still using a 80gb harddrive or something? As for memory, you won't have a problem with more than 2gb, which is the norm now, even with the pagefile/virtual memory turned off. Vista actually USES ram instead of letting it sit there to precache programs for faster startup, as I understand it.

Not as much as I would like. I can only get Vista down to about 32 processes.

I beg to differ. I would say the majority of computer users are still working with 1 gig of ram. Also, the part about it using up all the RAM would explain why it is slow and prone to crashing.

I've never used Vista on anything with less than 2gb, but I've yet to see it crash since I first installed it in August or September.
I'm going to reiterate: If you have a new pc with 2gb of ram or more get Vista. It will be noticeably faster. If you've still got a Pentium 4 or D or AMD equivalent or less than 1gb ram, stick with XP because Vista will be slow.

My biggest problem with it wasn't that, but that it was so damn big, and all the popup confirmation boxes get annoying as hell. Ultimately though, I'm going to switch to Linux on my primary PC, as the free part is too attractive.

All in all though, I don't really see where it is an improvement over XP. Maybe you have some thoughts on this as you seem to use it regularly...

I use vista and it's great. Didn't have to personally install any drivers and I have yet to see any spyware/adware. No crashes or anything. Silky-smooth.
I bought ultimate for $20 through my University.
I love how people say all this shit about how terrible it is without even trying it, just because of the windows stigma.
Yes, the release wasn't as smooth as it could have been. Yes, Vista uses a greater amount of resources than most operating systems. But I've yet to experience a single problem. Every XP machine I've ever used had to be reformatted and reinstalled periodically due to random corruptions of OS files and other stupid shit.
Give credit where credit's due, people.

OP: Go Windows XP 64-bit edition (x64) --it has the benefits of XP with the extra ram support of a 64-bit OS. (Meaning you can exceed 3.5 gigs of ram if you want to.)
The only downside is, I've heard it's sometimes hard to find 64-bit drivers for all your hardware. However, I just built a new system with x64, and I have not run into a single issue with drivers. I think that if you use modern parts, you're unlikely to run into this problem.
As for the Win2k supporters... y'all know XP is built on NT too, right? That's why it doesn't suck like 95/98/98se/Millenium. XP practically IS 2k. Technically, it's the successor. 2k was the new NT, and XP is a consumer port of 2k.

I actually have used Vista, for the record.
Also, i've never had to reinstall XP after a format, and I have it on 4 different machines. I hold nothing against Vista because of a "windows stigma." As stated, I use XP. But also as previously mentioned, I fail to see where there is any groundbreaking or otherwise necessary improvement that Vista offers over XP.

Word... except, explain to me how you can format a drive and then not reinstall the OS afterwards...
I'm going assume you meant "after the initial build" instead of "after a format"?..

I guess if that's your case, the I really can't offer you a really great reason to upgrade.
For me, it's the added security and durability that prompted me to switch. I've installed XP on several machines, and most always seem to eventually get some sort of quirky problem that drives me nuts. I used firewalls and anti-virus software in my installs, mind you. With vista, I didn't install any third-party firewall or antivirus and it has been doing great for seven or eight months.

Actually, when he said:

My response meant that I've never had to "reformat and reinstall periodically..."
Obviously you can't reformat without reinstalling, i've just never had to reformat in the first place. Nice try tho

The only useful improvement in Vista is the search function. It is infinitely better in Vista. I turned off all of the fancy GUI stuff. Pointless.
