Compassion
    #7948994 - 01/29/08 01:44 AM (16 years, 3 days ago)

For a while I was convinced that all my actions and motivations were selfish. After giving it much thought and feeling, I suspect it is simply not true. When I am happy or in the flow I have an intense empathy and compassion for other people. I suspect that it is possible to awaken this in oneself, almost like an objective morality (maybe based on unity). Is this delusional?

Well, I think you are still acting selfishly, but to act selfish only carries with it negative connotations when one is creating suffering ignorantly in one's actions. For example, I would think that it is the emotional being and positive experience and understanding you gain from practicing compassion and empathy. This is selfish; people seem much more disinclined to feel this way for others if doing so causes themself great personal sacrifice.

And then there is the question of sacrifice, which is an interesting thing to think about. I've concluded that it isn't necessary to sacrifice oneself to be compassionate and to effect greater change.

I don't think you are delusional, you have just realized that, often, helping others can be more rewarding for reality as a whole than in passive indulgences of our own. I wouldn't get too concerned about "selfish/selflessness" because it is kind of a non-issue, simply be aware of the exact nature of yourself, your actions, and the environment you are interacting with.

Awareness transcends ignorance and suffering. :mushroom2:
