By all means, provide some understanding of what you are referring to, so that we have something substansial to discuss. This is a discussion forum, after all, and not a well-wishing forum.

The Hindu festival of Navaratri is a nine day festival. The king of the Asura (kind of demons, not really though) hooked up with a water buffalo, and his son, Mahashasura<SP?>, was born with the ability to change shape between a man and a buffalo. He took on many austerities, said many mantras, and was eventually praying and meditating pretty much 24/7. Amongst other things, he secured a promise from Brahma itself that he could not be killed by any god or man.
And then, he conqured heaven, hell, and earth. This was a problem. One, because he'd done it, two, because it was basically legit, and three, because none of the male gods could touch him.
So blam, Parvati, Lakshmi, Kali, and Shakti (I think that roster is right, but I think there are also different versions) got combined into one new being called Durga, a black skinned ten armed goddess who took weapons from all the other gods, went into hell, and beat ass for 9 days.
At the end, she and her lion trampled Mahashasura to death, and in being trampled, he became utterly enlightened and transcended.
Generally, if a God has to show up and kill you, you get enlightened, because if you've made enough of a nusiance of yourself to warrent their attention, you're probably pretty damned close to enlightenment as it is.
I've recently begun to adopt a lot of Hinduism. This is my best retelling of Navaratri, there are much better sources all over the web.
And yeah, Mr. Material Universe Devoid of the Supernatural has taken up religeon. I'm on new antidepressents, and with all the manic energy I've had, it was a short jump from agnostic to trying something out again.

So.. feel like discussing all that? I like it, because I like strong, violent female figures. And because I like any story where someone gains enlightenment through getting the crap kicked out of them.

It sounds very interesting. Are there any practices that coincide with each day?

Probably. I know there's a lot of singing and whatnot. I've kind of been winging it since there isn't a Hindu temple anywhere near me. Prayers to Durga, renactments of battle, praise for Mahashasura. As she killed him, she promised him that his name would always be held up and honored with hers. I'm slowly researching what a proper Navaratri consists of.

That's weird.
I'm reading Sundiata, which is a really old Malian epic, and there is a woman who was a shape-shifting water buffalo. In order to fulfil a prophecy, the king of Mali defeat's the woman's wraith and rapes her, and she gives birth to a son who has attributes of a lion (haven't quite read that far yet, so I don't know what his connection is with a lion). Quite strange that those are the two animals that appear in the story you're relating.
Anyway,
Hare Durga, Hare Durga!

My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

The story of Durga went far and wide and influenced a lot of other faiths. That said, I don't know enough to say if her story even started in Hinduism. She may have been adopted and her back story altered to fit. Those shifty, shifty gods.
But I mean, c'mon. Who here can't relate at least three creation myths that all bear striking resemblance coming from people who weren' ever supposed to have met eachother?
