Re: Mcdonalds took his life [Re: jewunit]

Everyone deserves the chance to be healthy, theres nothing wrong with wanting to save people from themselves or from Mcdonalds. I am very skinny, not fat. But here in America, obeseity is a very large problem. If you walk up to a over wieght man and asked him, "If you could go back in time and change things, and never have become fat in the first place would you do it?" Everytime the man will say yes. Well, if we get rid of these unhealthy fast food chains, it will be one step in the right direction. And then the goverment can make stricter guidlines about what can be sold and what can't be sold. And only foods that are good for your body can be purchased at schools and work places. Im not saying no candy at the grocery store, I'm talking about food people live off. Living off Mcdonalds is not the awnser.

If a man is more healthy a man is more happy. That is a fact.

Yeah, I find it kind of ironic that you post on the Shroomery and are calling for more government regulation of things people want.

Anyway everyone has a choice on whether to be healthy or not (regarding eating fastfood that is), Ive scoured the internet and have yet to find a case where a Mcdonalds employee put a gun to someones head screaming "EAT MY FOOD MOTHRFUCKER".

i was dropped on my head as a baby...

but clearly you've been dropped on your head everyday since...

your statements get dumber and dumber each time you make them... You want the government to control us, try and make us more robots then than we already are.

i agree schools should offer healthier food and they should teach the kids why its better than mcdonalds.. but the problem with that is they'd make shitty healthy food cause its cheaper and everyone would get turned off to it and goto mcdonalds anyway...

getting rid of mcdonalds isn't going to stop people from eating unhealthy, it might however make more people start deep frying they're own french fries only to set their kitchens on fire as well as the neighbors garage because they don't have the slightest clue what they're doing...

getting rid of fast food restaurants is going to make the home cooking base lazier than it is already with all these frozen taste like the inside of my ass meals that i might add are just as bad for you.

oh and.. we can't forget the real problem here it isn't bad food...

it's people... ignorant people... ignorant as in too lazy to make their own damn food. ignorant as in too lazy to learn what they're doing to their bodies. ignorant as in too lazy to exercise. ignorant as in spending their whole lives trying to gain everyone else's respect and approval while never actually respecting themselves... ignorant as in refusing to listen to the truth...

remember that thing called evolution, survival of the fittest, the idea here is that the lazy ones won't survive, the ignorant ones won't either, as well as many genetic mutants...

we're just trying to open you up to the truth but no, you won't listen...

mcdonalds isn't the problem, in fact mcdonalds provides hundreds of thousands if not millions of jobs in the world, if the US government would stop just mcdonalds and not the other fast food chains, thats well over 500,000 americans unemployed...

PLUS Mcdonalds and similar chains employ people whose whole job is to try to make their products better tasting, healthier, and easy to produce, because they know that people know the food is bad, but if they just made it healthier the prices would have to skyrocket and people would stop eating there, so they need to find ways to make healthy, easy to make in bulk quantity, cheap and tasty food... i hate to tell you the truth but that's no easy feat.

i'm not saying mcdonalds is by any means healthy, but it's healthier than it was 10 years ago which is a step in the right direction and they still continue to move in that direction.

Like you, i do not eat mcdonalds, but i don't blame mcdonalds for americas obesity problem or alarmingly high cholesterol and clogged arteries.

I blame american's who have the obesity problem, i blame the people that are too lazy for they're own good, i blame the ignorant people refusing to listen to facts...

try to make an educated remark next time you post... please??? i'll give you a 5 shroom rating for it....

I want to know how far you are willing to push the idea of personal responsibility. A lot of damage can be done to a child by parents that do not know how to do any better themselves. I saw some very startling statistics on the state of knowledge of the urban poor on matters of nutriton. I do not remeber them exatcly, but many more than I would have ever guessed don't even know what vitamins are. Many have absolutly no working concept of essenttial nutrients or proper diet whatsoever. This is staggering ignorance, and the children have little hope of learning any better themselves, or avoiding being severely damaged by the actions of their parents in the meantime. Are you content to leave the issue as is? If not, what would a libertarian do about it? The truth is that the degree to which economic pressures combine with ignorance is a vicious feedback loop, as people with poor nutrition are not likely to move higher up the social ladder. They do not die young enough to have this amount to social Darwinism, which sucks cuz they pass this problem down to their children as well.

Do you not see this as a problem that requires solving? I don't see much hope of an effective commercial or charitable solution emerging, given the economics and the magnitude of the problem.

What about parents who are dumb raising children? I find that the majority or the smarter kids in my peer group had intelligent and hard working parents. Perhaps if you're not intelligent and hard working there should be government regulations put on you so your children aren't also unintelligent and lazy because they won't know any better.

The question goes both ways, where are you willing to draw the line? Me, I'm willing to draw it on a pretty extreme end. People have the responsibility of protecting and educating themselves, the governments job is to protect their people from outside forces, and that's really it in my mind.

I'm really sorry your friends dad died :frown:

I don't really want to debate, because it's a sad reason that the debate came up, but I have to say I agree that it should come down to personal responsibility, not government regulations. I choose to be vegan, I choose to not eat at McDonalds. I choose to maintain a healthy weight. I also choose to do other things which are not as good for my body. It's all my choice. Your friend's dad had a choice too, and if McDonald's made him happy, at least he had a happy life.

Though, I agree, that fast food definitely has addictive properties to it, which can be a larger problem :/

And I just need to comment on one other thing - it seems out of anywhere, schools should be one of the places where food choice should be most available. I know from my own expriences and experiences of many others, most people do not want to be in school. I went to school every day because I was forced. Many schoolaged people are forced to school, forced to live in homes they may not choose, forced to do work they don't want to. Their lives are out of their control. Anything, even a simple thing like providing the option to buy unhealthy food at school, that helps students feel more in control of their lives seems good to me. If they had more choice, I bet there'd be less anxiety issues/anorexia/bulimia/binge eating/self injury/all the other issues that so many adolescents deal with as a way to cope with a lack of control in their lives.

I think education has a lot to do with it. The problems your describing about the urban poor being uneducated never occurred in the schools I grew up in. Sure, we had obese children and teenagers, but there were very few of them. That's because in the public school I went to, the food pyramid was EVERYWHERE. We had health classes in elementary school. We need to fund more education on the issue, I agree, and we need to teach children how to prepare their own meals IN PUBLIC SCHOOL from the age of about ten.

But you can't possibly tell me that the government should start regulating what people eat. Should people have the right to sue McDonalds for not putting proper warning signs in their establishments or on nutritional charts until we have the education problem solved? Sure. Why not. And if they lose or win, so be it. But if you come up with a VALID constitutional reason (and I'm begging you, please think about it for about two seconds, maybe leaf through a constitutional law book or maybe the Second Treatise on Government by John Locke) for prohibiting junk food, I will give you five stars too. But from what I've heard, you clearly are in favor of the policies of the DEA and the FDA, which are two fascist organizations that are destroying the fabric of the country. Your stance is NO DIFFERENT than theirs. You may make the choice to put things in your body that may be harmful AND illegal. How does this not seem hypocritical to you?
