This just in! Scientists report that peeing in the shower is possibly linked to genetic factors!

It's called the Y chromosome, I believe.

I recall there was a series of Heinlein books which involved a secret society whose purpose, through "positive" eugenics, was to increase the human life-span through the cultivation of long-lived individuals.

I believe the Bene Gesserit's breeding program from Dune might be an excellent example.

In any case, that artical was sensationalist. Were the people with no copies of this gene dumber than the rest? Were the people with two copies smarter than the rest? What gives? It smacks of phrenology.. there really isn't enough information to go throwing any sort of conclusions around based on what little was in that article.

The BG would be a good example, though I would say the Heinlein case was more relevant to modern society, since it was purely voluntary, and unmotivated by a manipulative pseudo-religious society.

I admit to having made a lot of commentary without reading the article. That might explain why I've commented only on the things that have been said in response to it. Perhaps when I'm done procrastinating over what needs to be done by 1pm or so today, I'll actually get around to making a response to the original post.

HOWEVER. I did correctly suppose, as Mushman has pointed out to me, that the article did not say the word "intelligence", but rather only said something which we would infer to indicate intelligence. That means I get a prize.

I did not see anything in that article that indicated an increase in the intelligence of a certain population of humans vs another population. The gene that was identified seems to be linked with the increased brain size (and other differences in brain structure) of humans compared to chimps.

I dunno where this 10% hubbub is comin from... either

About 10% of humans have two copies the "new" ASPM gene, while about 50% have two copies the "old" version. The other 40% of humans one copy of each.

Jeez you'd think you would read more than one thing on a subject before making up your mind

Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free.
But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

Well... that clears things up.

Quote:
As of today, there is no evidence to support the notion that the new ASPM gene increases intelligence, and some researchers dispute whether the spread of the gene even demonstrates selection.
