Self-replicating, self-repairing robots

When we one day build machines such as these as there is no real technological barrier, will they then be said to be alive?

I think I would say yes. When you think about it, life as we know it only has a few criteria. One, it has to reproduce. Two, it has to use some kind of energy, which modern day robots already do. And three it has to have water. Now obviously robots would never meet this criteria, which is why they would be "artificial life". Basically a replica of life in every way we can produce.

I actually thought about this one time while I was tripping. If you think about technology now, it is already evolving in some ways like a life form. It adapts to its environment, and only the best suited for their job get reproduce (i.e. natural selection). Of course the entire process is controlled by humans, so technology is in no way "self" reproducing. Its like playing with stem cells in a petri dish, they only do what we want them to do and design them to do.

Raymond Kurzweil has written a lot on this. Check out his latest book, The Singularity is Near and The age of spiritual machines (i think those are the exact title names).

He discusses the future of technology, especially nanotechnology and self-replicating/repairing nanobots.

A Robot does not have to have the same type of vision a human does, a Robot does not have to use the same type of muscles, why does a Robot have to have the same brain to have consciousness? Is it because we know so little about the human brain that somehow it makes sense that only an exact copy of the structure of the brain would be able to have consciousness? :psychsplit:

Then the soul must exist in a realm that does not interact with our reality, which means it has nothing to do with my self or my consciousness.  If it did interact with our world, it would leave evidence.

How can we determine the presence of a soul? What are the criteria for life? These questions cannot be answered objectively. But that's ok.

The beauty of life/reality, as we know it, doesn't depend upon strict definitions; that's just something we humans like to do. It would be interesting to ask the robots.

Well, I have my senses. We all have that. Through them I gain the perception that many people have some sort of spirit, but this cannot be identified in the objective, scientific sense, and in that way, I have no way of telling that humans have a soul
