why does every one try to puzzle this out like a secret code???
it is not a logical secret thing, not if this then that.
it's right out int he open and constantly with us.

enlightenment is about being unstuck whatever words you use it is just that.
and it's about getting unstuck when you get stuck again (you will)
and helping others get unstuck when you can.
and seeing that the whole thing is normal.

it's not absolute and final because the mind is not teflon except with alzheimers.

Learning about something you did not know is enlightenment.

If you are referring to what the Buddha did, he become extremely awake, lucid, clear minded, and a feeling of lightness... no tension at all. He attained a state of being in love with all things. I've felt it before, temporarily, and I've also met someone who I would consider attained such a state.

So yes, in my opinion, it exists and it is wonderful. It just requires you to strive for it and to break all your old habitual tendencies, which is much easier said than done.

I think it's an impossible pipe dream. I don't know of anybody but fictonal characters who achieve it. One by one the so called enlightened masters get caught with their fingers in the cookie jar. Who needs enlightenement when you're happy.

I met a Buddhist Lama who to me seemed nearly perfectly Enlightened. Looking into his eyes was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. But I do not know for sure whether he was Enlightened. I voted Yes.

according to a nun I know and something she wrote once
enlightenment is having any experience of no-self, of voidness, of transpersonal nature, so that one knows for certain that it is so

however, it is different than liberation, which is complete cessation of suffering and merging with this reality of no-self in totality

so, many of us are enlightened, as in, light has been shined upon us a few times in our lives, but few of us are close to liberated as liberation requires quite a bit of devoted work.

if you want to equate enlightenment to liberation and cessation of suffering, or perhaps something different, the attainment of siddhis and powers, or what have you

then it's trickier

but it is doable because the concepts were created and concepts aren't created about this stuff unless it has been experienced in the first place for the roadmap to be established.

I tend to see enlightenment more as a continual process than an destination. On the other hand, I guess I can't really know until I get there.

It is in the potential for all of us to realize non-self. What people seek is right before their eyes. In the world of illusion around them, they see the death and birth of family members, nature and eventually all compound objects, if we remained conscious for that long. The illusion that separates us from permanent enlightenment is the attachment to our identity, a self which we never owned in the first place. Realizing that you cannot lose anything, and that your impermanence is the impermanence of everything around you, must come quite naturally after years of mindfulness in existence.

We are already there, just as the raindrops already tumble down towards the ocean. The question of unity is simply a question of time, no matter the suffering we cause others or the attachments we build for ourselves in the present moment.
