Pot triggers psychotic symptoms, brain scan show's.
    #6858064 -

I didn't think this was new info, but it does sound a bit exaggerated in some parts..

Quote:
New findings on marijuana's damaging effect on the brain show the drug triggers temporary psychotic symptoms in some people, including hallucinations and paranoid delusions, doctors say.

British doctors took brain scans of 15 healthy volunteers given small doses of two of the active ingredients of cannabis, as well as a placebo.

One compound, cannabidiol, or CBD, made people more relaxed. But even small doses of another component, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, produced temporary psychotic symptoms in people, including hallucinations and paranoid delusions, doctors said.

The results, to be presented at an international mental health conference in London on Tuesday and Wednesday, provides physical evidence of the drug's damaging influence on the human brain.

"We've long suspected that cannabis is linked to psychoses, but we have never before had scans to show how the mechanism works," said Dr. Philip McGuire, a professor of psychiatry at King's College, London.

In analyzing MRI scans of the study's subjects, McGuire and his colleagues found that THC interfered with activity in the inferior frontal cortex, a region of the brain associated with paranoia.
Continue Article

"THC is switching off that regulator," McGuire said, effectively unleashing the paranoia usually kept under control by the frontal cortex.

In another study being presented at the conference, a two-day gathering of mental health experts discussing the connections between cannabis and mental health, scientists found that marijuana worsens psychotic symptoms of schizophrenics.

Doctors at Yale University in the U.S. tested the impact of THC on 150 healthy volunteers and 13 people with stable schizophrenia. Nearly half of the healthy subjects experienced psychotic symptoms when given the drug.

While the doctors expected to see marijuana improve the conditions of their schizophrenic subjects — since their patients reported that the drug calmed them — they found that the reverse was true.

"I was surprised by the results," said Dr. Deepak Cyril D'Souza, an associate professor of psychiatry at Yale University's School of Medicine. "In practice, we found that cannabis is very bad for people with schizophrenia," he said.

While D'Souza had intended to study marijuana's impact on schizophrenics in more patients, the study was stopped prematurely because the impact was so pronounced that it would have been unethical to test it on more people with schizophrenia.

"One of the great puzzles is why people with schizophrenia keep taking the stuff when it makes the paranoia worse," said Dr. Robin Murray, a professor of psychiatry at King's College.

Experts theorized that schizophrenics may mistakenly judge the drug's pleasurable effects as outweighing any negatives.

Understanding how marijuana affects the brain may ultimately lead experts to a better understanding of mental health in general.

"We don't know the basis of paranoia or anxiety," said McGuire.

"It is possible that we could use cannabis in controlled studies to understand psychoses better," he said. McGuire theorized that could one day lead to specific drugs targeting the responsible regions of the brain.

i've never smoked pot but i know that biased info triggers those same psychotic symptoms in me. once again "studies" like these get all the media attention and are approved by the fascist goverment, while all the info about pot helping to prevent cancer and whatnot gets supressed and nearly banned.

I'm gonna smoke weed for the rest of my life...

I'm a medical patient, and I'm gonna toke and toke. I don't care what they say, it helps me, and I know that for fact. They can take that study and shove it up their arse. Who cares if it triggers paranoia? I already knew that... I used to be a paranoid motherfucker. Now that I'm a patient and LEGAL, my paranoia is gone! What a mystery!

This sounds like a writer gave his version of a research paper which was funded by a government research grant.

Tainted fund's gets tainted results.

Except that funds for a particular grant are (obviously) awarded before the results of a particular study are known.

Since these studies are not yet available in published format, it's difficult to judge the quality of them.

There are also similar studies in France and New Zealand with the same findings.

The France studies found that eating marijuana cause double the level of THC in the blood compared to smoking and also took twice as long to metabolize compared to smoking. They studied humans using THC via ingestion and used very high doses. From those high doses, patience were unable to function and showed psychotic symptoms.

They weren't just smoking a joint, they were eating allot of THC.

The New Zealand study was based on farmers who smoked heavy amounts of marijuana on a daily basis. They found many of these people would check themselves in for psychiatric help for depression and/or mild psychosis after 1 1/2 to 2 years of very heavy smoking.

You also have to be aware of the semantics used to describe the acute effects of THC. For instance, in a previous paper on of the authors reported that a THC injection caused:

(1) produced schizophrenia-like positive and negative symptoms; (2) altered perception; (3) increased anxiety; (4) produced euphoria; (5) disrupted immediate and delayed word recall, sparing recognition recall; (6) impaired performance on tests of distractibility, verbal fluency, and working memory (7) did not impair orientation; (8) increased plasma cortisol.

And in fact, these same behaviors are found in psychotic individuals. Sometimes it is a manner of semantics, although not necessarily incorrect.

I smoke dank headies EVERY DAY. :bigjoint:

That being said, once or twice a week I get "uncomfortably" high off just a bowl or two a chronic. This usually entails extremely irrational paranoid thought that no matter what I can convince myself is real. Usually by when peak the high wears down 20-30 minutes but sometimes up to a couple hours later i slowly start to relieve the anxiety and realize the thoughts were irrational although sometimes it may remain not-as-serious in the back of my mind up until i wake up the next morning.

There has been 2 times in my life, once while a schwag smoker and once while being a regular smoker of good chronic, that i hit some incredible chronic and had "cannabis psychosis". I couldn't hear the words coming outta ppls mouths even though i saw their lips moving, and i would hear them say things that in reflection i know they couldn't have been saying. That comes with the feeling that they are all teaming up or planning something against you and thats why you can't hear them. Everyone is hiding something from you and they are all out to screw you over with it. The ultimate paranoia breakdown.

Grant it those points were reached with excessive amounts, the semi-regular paranoia attacks are not.

Also taking into consideration that since i started taking psychedelics, especially more then a few times at very high doses, my tolerance has gone WAY down. As a daily smoker of chronic, I still only need 1-2 hits and thats it to be almost "too high" for a good while including some, usually very much appreciated, visuals from hppd.

I am very pro-legalization and believe wholly in the wide-ranging positive medicinal effects cannabis has just from what I've seen with me and some older smokers Ive met. I'm not saying I would "complain" about these negative side effects i just adjust my dose and frequency of use accordingly. I know this isn't normal for a lot of you but the truth is everyone reacts differently and heavy doses of THC can indeed induce very negative side effects, and I'd imagine, in a lot of people. Especially those who haven't tried weed before. I don't even remember how many non-regular-smokers who smoke a bowl with me of some super dank that absolutely freak out and remain silent & horribly anxious + irrationally paranoid of nothing while being uncomfortable only to talk about it after they come down.

As the saying goes "there's some truth to your fiction and some fiction to your truth"... studies like this are obviously the work of joint pharmaceutical and governmental propaganda, absolutely. Exaggerated results, psychoanalytical suggestion, and specific test subject selection are assumed. Although I'd be willing to be bet at least a few of the positive ones were padded slightly too. It just sucks that these bad ones are the ones more places publish. But it is a legitimate study to do, IMO, b/c all aspects of something should be recognized, regardless.

I've had that happen to me a few times. The first few times I was actually right about the people working against me to fuck me over. It happened like I thought it would when I was high. When I came down and said "Oh no, you're just being paranoid" and trusted them....I got used.

The most recent time, I came up with the most insaneeeee things. I didn't take them seriously though. I mean, some of the things I came up with were waayy out there. I knew that though, and enjoyed being in that state.

Just felt like saying that.

I used to smoke pot every day until I started getting severely violent mental breakdowns about once a week, and developed chronic social phobia that I still have to this day. I haven't smoked daily for over a year now and I still have psychotic symptoms. I don't think the weed alone caused it, I think I had underlying problems and the pot smoking just brought it out.

This is nonsense. My mom has schizophrenia (she's never used any drug including alcohol and tobacco), and the episodes she tells me about are similar to when pot paranoia.

However, pot paranoia is mainly due to its illegality, and it only consists of irrational fears and incoherent thoughts, but again, most of it is due to the drug being illegal and because it increases your creativity and makes you a bit introverted. I've had many episodes like this before I ever started smoking pot, and they all stopped when I realized that they were irrational and nonsense.

When I was very young, I'd always have irrational thoughts such as: The neighbors are going to murder me, or somebody is spying on me, and I would tell people, and they would back me up, saying shit like "nah you're not crazy, you're just extra careful." Then the first time I smoked pot, I had these same thoughts but they were more creative, sometimes silly. Then when the effects wore off, I realized that these are nonsense and I've never had them again (5+ years of toking daily).

The difference between me (us) and other people is that we do research into what we're putting into our own body, and most of us know about various mental illnesses and mental states. The average Joe will read about schizophrenia, and then smoke pot and think he's going crazy and call 911 and this will be added to the statistics that pot causes psychosis. It's just ignorance, folks.

Schizophrenics might smoke pot (to self-medicate, or for fun), but pot doesn't cause schizophrenia.

Doesn't alcohol, a legal drug, do many of the same things to people, Especially violent psychotic outbreaks?

I am a regular marijuana smoker. I am very young. I know for a fact that I will be smoking bud for the rest of my life. Nothing anyone says will change that, and you know why? I also know for a fact that it helps me on a daily basis with being more open to people, sparking my fires of creativity, and being at peace with the world (no matter how fucked up it currently is). So these reports from these fascist pigs are completely useless.

Yea, and I'd imagine, someone experiencing "alcohol psychosis" is MUCH more dangerous then someone experiencing "cannabis psychosis".

How many stoners you seen "too high" that go around breaking bottles over peoples head, beating their wife and running their car's into trees?

why are they useless, they give out information that has been shown through testing. just because you enjoy smoking weed doesn't mean the tests are wrong or not worth anything. In fact tests like these hellp for future studies of psychedelic drugs and helps us understand them better.

I'm curious what exactly are you nay sayers disagreeing with.

Can anyone else picture some poor fuck whos never been high in his life strapped down to a chair in a lab, surrounded by weird guys in lab coats and clipboards, and then shot up with a high dose of THC?

The environment these experiments were run in and the people involved probably had a good deal of influence on the result. If people shot me up with THC in an uncomfortable setting, I'd freak out too.

yes that might have had an impact on the results(they didn't give much background on test subjects) but what you are saying is it has potential for paranoia which doesn't help your case much.
