Children & religious intoxication

I think that's it's deeply wrong & abusive for parents to push their children into any kind of religious dogma.
One of the major mistake that parents do is shielding their children from all questionable and difficult things.
When a child is born he is ready to learn, ready to accumulate (and in his first childhood this process happens especially through imitation) anything. A child is completely open and trusting, and his parents are the first on that trust.
Taking to account this situation, the parents can basically imprint any belief in their child's mind.
If a parent tells his child that monsters are real, then the child takes it as a incontestable truth (the implications that such a matter draws to itself is obvious).
Following the same recipe, if parents say that Jesus is our Lord and savior and that those who disobey will burn in hell, then the child will take it fro granted and believe that story. A child has no other choice but to take as valid everything that his parents "teach" him, and if they teach him only one pint of view and deny them the chance to learn any other, how can that child be considered a Christian, Buddhist, Muslim or whatever?
It's not like the child actually gets to choose anything...
Then if the child grows up being taught one side while being taught that other sides are wrong, that will keep him, that will keep him from exploring new possibilities and new points of view.

i agree. parents shouldnt impress religion on their kids, but unfortunately theres no way to stop it. its a pretty normal thing in society these days =P

Well that was exactly the subject of matter.
How can a child who's been hearing all that all the time 7 in the same time he's been taught that any other options might hurt him & if he really has bad luck he gets some over-protective parents which stop him from personal experience... pretty hard to see any other options.

If you are taught something as a child,
and it has a profound positive effect on your own life,
how do you not share that with your child....?

That is what you are dealing with....
And yes, with traditions and religion, it is hard to see any other options as a child....  :shrug:

thank god for the internet... at least when the child grows up there is the possibility for self-discovery.  not following someone elses path, etc.  that is, if the child cares :smirk:

Well, sadly, we are all inevitably indoctrinated by some sort of "dogma." Whether what we are taught is Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, or Atheist is irrelevant; we are all indoctrinated in some way, shape, or form.

If I have kids (I hope not; I think I may get a vasectomy), I'll raise them secularly, urging them to question all things and examine the evidence/data posited in all situations, and I will especially urge them to question their own upbringing. That's right, question the very idea of questioning everything; question healthy skepticism. I think it's not only fair but entirely necessary that we let our kids decide what they believe, insofar as they're not going to be killing other people because of their beliefs.

What's in a way even more alarming is that these parents who chose to grow up their children with a specific dogma have no idea how much harm they do to their own kids and how much suffering and confusion they're gonna face in their life as grown ups.
