This is not from experience, but just from what I've learned from teks and whatnot.


You are going to want about a 1/2" layer of vermiculite on the bottom. If you used 1/2 pint jars to colonize, you should cut the birthed cake in half (vertically). Then crumble one half on top of the vermiculite. Use the other half for another casing.

about an inch on the bottom, maybe a little less, then if you are using half pint jars just put half the cake, cut in half vertically. thin top casing layer

thats exactly what I will be doing, but instead of using the solo cups I will be using plant pots as I will have quiet abit more substrate (colonized) to work with and instead of using my main grow chamber I will be using a rubbermaid container for that. Just layering perlite and adding a heating pad to the bottom of the container and adjusting the heat I will cover the plant pots with Ziploc bags to act as its own drip sheild and keep the humidity up.

I was thinking about using the SOS method with one of my cakes and case the other 4, 2 jars to each plastic bin. If I used the SOS method, what kind of cup would I need to use ? How big does the cup need to be ?
