Why do not make a cumulative order for agar powder and light malt extract in powder?
    #6580596 -

Hi everyone,
i'm really bored to pay a lot for agar powder, and for light malt extract powder. why can't we make a cumulative order for them? and also for gentamicin? Perhaps we can find at a cheap price if we order A LOT.

Fabio (angry and hungry) :P

i'm looking for 500 gr of agar and 250 gr of light malt extract. If we're a lot we can buy kilograms of agar and other stuff.

But we've to create a cumulative order for europe and another one for america..it's a mess!

Fabio- light malt extract should be super cheap from brew stores...

I get agar from fungi perfecti, and pay quite a bit for it i guess, 35$/lb or so.. but i think its really great stuff, and it really seems to go along way so i dont mind..

what kind of prices are you paying?

very good idea. i'm desperately in need of gentacimin sulphate - most of my cultures are bacterially contaminated. problem is you have to get special permission to buy it in UK, so if anyone wanted to buy a large load, I would gladly contribute. you can get it from sporeworks, but postage for the little vial is way too high.

I know is a real mess. but we can try.

For first we should open a thread for Europe and a thread for America.

mattymonkey: hello! i know but i want to save a bit of money with the speditions, and here in italy light malt extract in powder costs 16.50€ for 1kg, spedition included. Agar powder costs 17.50€ for 100 gr. Gentamicin i don't know..

Fabio, if you can find a Chinese grocer they may have agar. It should be cheaper.

The price you are paying for malt seems a little high, but not that much.

Other antibiotic besides gentamicin will work, even though they break down some when heated, they still inhibit bacterial growth. The ones related to pennicillin, like ampicillin , use at 50mg/liter and the ones related to
tetracycline, use at 10mg/liter.

The cheapest place to get antibiotics are feed stores. If you have some antibiotics in pill form they will work also.

you need a prescription for all those anti-biotics.

is there any legal source for them?

I know you can get 'Oxycare' - a pet antibiotic with oxytetracycline, but again, that is prescription only.

You can order pre-mixed agar powder from stamet's site with gentmycin sulphate already added. I can get all the ingredients locally here in seattle for about half his price, but in my opinion, that's not worth the time and fuel to go get it and the time to mix it all up. The agar agar from chinese food stores is granulated, and needs to be powdered to disolve easily, so add the extra time to grind it up, and it's really not saving much money. A pound of pre-mixed agar will typically fill about 500 petri dishes, so the $65 isn't that much to spend.

Hi all!

Thanks you all for your suggestions but i bet that you all live in USA. In USA everything is easily or quite easily to access for, here in italy i really a f****in mess to find something. 65USD aren't so much but for me is better to save money. Do you imagine how much is the spedition until Europe? AT LEAST 23-27 USD for 4-6 weeks(ocean) spedition. And isn't finished because when the pack arrives to the douane here in italy you've to pay the 40% of the cost of the pack to receive it if it's from usa and if it's cost more than 40 usd..i think that i can't buy from Stamets until he's here in Europe..

Hi Fabio.

For UK mycolgy supplies:

http://www.micro-science.co.uk

He's probably the best supplier for mycology stuff here, if you can't get it on ebay.

For syringes and agar stuff check out:

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/The-Syringe-Shop

That's UK though, although I think postage to EU countries is pretty cheap these days.

I buy agar at local Oriental grocery store.
Which can be turned to dry powder, in a blender.
Or, for that matter, blended as a wet slurry.

I buy dry light malt at a local home brew beer/wine supply place.
Home brew beer supply places also carry dry dextrose.
And, often food grade calcium carbonate powder.

I suggest you search the phone book of any close large city.
As most will have such stores.
Then call around to see if any stock what you want/need.

Ask your friends and family if they have any unused antibiotics in their medical cupboard. Especially if they have pets! Getting animals to take medicine can be tough, so sometimes some of the prescription is left over.

IMO it's better to transfer away from bacterial contamination onto untreated agar than to use antibiotic agar to clean up a culture.

Agreed. The only time I use antibiotic agar is when cloning wild mushrooms. It helps the mycelium get a head start. It isn't necessary when inoculating from culture slants or spores.

Chris: Thank you but you misunderstood that GBP is more powerfull of EUR, so for me those are high prices :\

Anno: Is what i'll do..found agar in the Chinatown of Rome, and hope it's at cheap prices. Unlucky here aren't brewery, because we produce a lot of wine, and into the enotechs (the shops with the chemical products for the wine) hasn't gor, almost locally, dry malt extract (i live in a town 30 km from Rome).I've asked to a lot of homebrewers and said me that light malt extract is impossible to find in Rome.

falcon et RR: how do you clean a culture if you start from a very dirty sporeprint? that generates molds and bacteria?

I'm a bit busy right now, but one of these days, you could send me the euros and I'll get your supplies for you and ship them back to Italy with a receipt for $10 for all of it. That should help with the customs charges.

To clean up a culture on agar, you transfer the healthy mycelium away from the contaminants. Below are two dishes with contaminants. healthy mycelium is transferred from each to a new dish. You can see where the transfers were taken from on the mold contaminated dish. Do this in a glovebox, not in front of a flowhood, which will blow the contaminants all over your work area and into the receiving dish as well. The dish with bacteria in one section still has two good sections without bacteria. mycelium from these sections should be transferred to a new dish.

In the new dish, as soon as new growth is observed, immediately transfer the brand new growth to a third dish. This gets a transfer made prior to any contaminants having time to appear. It usually only takes a couple of well timed transfers to get a pure culture.
