Check this list.
One of these places will have or be able to tell you where.
Light dry malt might be found in Italy.

You can also get it in canned liquid form.
Which is about the consistency of honey.
http://www.muntons.com/mmi/products/dried_extract.asp
Muntons in UK sells worldwide.

Light malt is also used in making baby food products.
It is also used in various bakery products.
So, you might check those, for a local source.

Thank you agar and thank you Jeremy. You two afraid me!!!!

Just a question, which were your terms of search?

I've search for local malt but it's not dried and it's just dark. A research discovered that isn't 100% sorghum but a good 25% of wheat.

Where can i find a recipe for liquid malt?? which are the differences netween a media prepared with malt extract agar and with liquid malt agar?

I hope i can't find raw materials at reasonable price locally.

I wouldn't worry about following an exact recipe fabio. All you need is a bit of fungi food and a gelling agent such as agar. Stamets even gives a recipe in his book for grinding up dog food and making agar out of that.

The important thing is to not make it too strong. Less 'food' in agar is usually better, as it forces the mycelium to grow in search of nutrients, rather than just sit there fat and happy. Good luck.

These recipes are designed for agar maintenance of Psilocybe species. All media have a near-neutral pH and should be sterilized for twenty to thirty minutes at 15 psi pressure. 500 ml of medium will pour around 20 petri dishes. Using a different medium from time to time will prevent the culture getting used to one medium.

Malt Extract Agar (MEA)
10 grams light malt extract
9 grams agar agar
500 ml potable or distilled water

Potato Dextrose (Yeast-extract) Agar (PD(Y)A)
broth from boiling 150 grams sliced potatoes
in 500ml water for 30 minutes(add water to 500ml)
(You can use 5 g of instant potato flakes instead)
9 g agar agar
7 grams dextrose( = glucose, or 10 ml honey or corn syrup )
1 gram brewers yeast or yeast-extract (optional)

Fabio - I've used the liquid malt from Muntons (same stuff I showed the local links for - check them out, I'm curious to see if they're useful, by the way, I'm not exactly sure on the search terms, I kept trying until I found it for ya...). Anyway, the Muntons works great, and I just weighed it like anything else, I just put a baby food jar on my scale, and poured until I got the right amount - I usually used 15-20g per 25g agar+1000ml spring water.

I also highly concur with RR. Don't make yourself crazy looking for malt. I've used all kinds of crazy stuff including crackers, organic whole wheat cereals, coconut water (instead of the distilled or spring water - you crack open the coconut and pour the water into your mix, not coconut water from a store...), John Holiday from Aloha Medicinals says in a place in the Advanced forums (this is a few years back tho...) that he went to the pet store, bought crickets, and put them in the blender and used the dead crickets as the nutrients. He was trying to do some invigorating of a strain in that example though. I've heard dog food agar works great -also from John at Aloha, but haven't used it myself.

So the point is, get yourself some agar first, and then try different nutrient sources (just use your imagination). I like to use about 15-20 grams of any selected nutrient source per 25g agar and 1000ml water.

Loving y'all
JD

Hey Agar how do you go about making this recipe? I've got all the ingredients, just not sure on the steps? Just pc everything for 15 mins at 15psi, mix and pour into the petrie dish? Does it require refrigeration before introducing the sample? And after?

The Philippines is one of the top producers of agar (carrageenan), we buy it retail from any corner store for 15 US cents for a 5 gram bag that will make a liter of media and that is such a retail price. What with color, flavoring, sugar and packaging. I bet it's a tenth of that wholesale. I will donate a couple of kilos that will make 400 liters of media to both countries if you figure out freight. and i think its 120 US $ freight for a 70lbs box airmail(12,000 liters media). Ask a Filipino near you about "Balikbayan box".
My hubby is visiting relations in England soon. Maybe I can convince him to bring a suitcase load of this dangerous white powder to you guys in Europe. Can't help you with the other gents etc. I have not used it before.
But this agar "stuff" works perfectly everytime

WTF...this thread is so old. i'd still find out for you guys
