@daytripper, noah's ark is an interesting account indeed. several other ancient scriptures besides the bible also have quite a bit to say about planetary cataclysms.

That guy has a sweet idea, but he's really bad at defending it.

All he has to say is "I didn't force a single one of those kids to say this, they all did voluntarily to support a cause they believe in"

Instead of that psychological torture bullshit, bring in the old freedom of choice argument.

Not beeing a smartass or trying discredit you at all.. But what other sources give evidence of a massive flood. I have also heard things from other civilization reporting a massive flood in their history. I am curious.

Almost EVERY ancient culture had a flood story. Floods were part of the world, and still are.

I think you need to make at least some effort to make the distinction between a specific sect of a religion and the religion as a whole. For example, "atheists are angsty pretentious pricks who are really just looking for an excuse to insult others" is not the same as saying "this group of atheists are angsty pretentious pricks who are really just looking for an excuse to insult others".

However, I would agree that extremist christian sects are devoid of any and all ability to form coherent logical thoughts.

it's good you ask. you can find stories of great deluges in the native american writings of the Kato indians, the Hopi, the Aztec, Inca, Maya, Caddo, just to name a few.

In the far east the Chinese Shiji, Chuci, Liezi, Huainanzi, Shuowen Jiezi, Siku Quanshu, Songsi Dashu, and other texts, contain references to a creator goddess who repairs the broken heavens after a great flood or calamity, and repopulates the world with people.

In India we have the Matsya Purana and the Shatapatha Brahmana  talking about high tides on the earth.

The most common accounts however are found in ancient near east (Sumeria, Egypt, Babylon) with the most popular being the Hebrew story of Noah's Ark in Genesis.

These scriptures speak about a great deluge specifically.

talking about natural disasters is not the same as talking about mass genocides. :nono:

by the way if you have never heard of Pianka, he has in fact advocated the need to exterminate 90% of the population through the airborne ebola virus.

I remember having to go to a Lutheran school and somewhere around the age of 9 or 10 I just kind of stopped believing what they were saying to me. It just didn't jive quite right. Unfortunately, I didn't have the courage at the time to admit it to my parents, and I would be practically shunned if I had admitted to any of my classmates. I think that what this guy is doing is awesome. He's encouraging an environment where it's OK to say "Well, I've thought this over for myself and despite what my parents and even my school (in some cases) has told me about religion, I heartily disagree." +1 for free thinking.
