Re: Downplaying Reality [Re: MushmanTheManic]

philosophically, you're right... there's nothing but the experience

now, if you stop there, you're into solipsism basically, not even regarding others as real since their experience is not experienced by you. and I've got nothing against this belief...

but, solipsism is a rare find, people clearly relate to things in a sense of belonging or opposition, me versus surroundings, other people, ideas versus feelings. this is the basis for human logic. categories.

now I realize you're only going against the categorization of real vs illusion, and I agree, on the basis of what we have here - a single moment's experience, it seems impossible to discern the two - or even that "illusion" should exist.

but, I don't think many of these philosophies are teaching to break apart and disclude experiences as less worthy than other. they focus on letting go of attachments to some experiences over others, in a way uniting the duality within ones perception, and then - the rest is up to you. they only give you a travel guide with common destinations. one may no longer experience things after certain experiences, and so, to the present instance of themself, those past beliefs are not applicable [real] to them in the present.

The problem is not that one should not discard what was previously considered truth to them. The problem comes from the connotation of illusions. Illusions still 'exist' so long as they are experienced. Certain people teach that some of these can be overcome, no longer exist, and in doing so - the person's wellbeing has improved.

Abstract concepts or spiritual experiences are entirely confirmed within the experience itself

1. How can you experience an abstract concept?

How can you not? Love, hatred, fear, uncertainty, denial, logic, most of what humans experience is not physical. Most of reality is abstract information that cannot be communicated to other people, which is why the experiences of all human beings are so varied. Even if all human beings are perceiving the same sensory perceptions and observing all the same physical reality, the information content is vastly different from human to human because of the abstract concepts that are integral to their mindset. Our states of being are not physical concrete parts of existence, after all.

Of course, the experience precedes the labels. If we did not experience abstraction in our thought processes, then we would not have a word for it.

2. How can an experience confirm itself? (Seems like begging the question.)

The experience is the only reality we know. The experience confirms itself within the experience, because we can never know anything outside of the experience. No human being knows whether there's an objective reality outside of what he experiences, because it's all relative to his conscious mindset. We can only confirm what we become conscious of- and what we become conscious of must be experienced. How else could you possibly confirm anything within your own reality from a single perspective?

If your entire experience confirmed your nature of being as a bird, then you would not logically have any hesitations anyway, because you would not know any other way of looking at yourself.

What if my entire experience hadn't confirmed this? What if I woke up one morning with wings and a beak? Does it seem more probable that I am hallucinating - my perception is different from reality - or that I have actually become a bird?

Here, you are still using your experience as a basis for all of reality. You are taking a point in your memory that you are experiencing at the moment, which says that you were something else before, and you are perceiving the present, which says that you have somehow transformed. So how could your perception be different from reality, when the reality you are basing the present on is the perception of the past?

Experience is full of contradictions and conflicting perception, yet you could not be experiencing any of it if you hadn't become conscious of it. If your transformation is, as you claim, an illusion, then how did you become conscious of it? Does something come from nothing- that is, you simply become conscious of nothingness and interpret it as something else? Clearly that cannot be the case, because what you perceive exists at least within your individual experience. And if you are an individual walking through the world who has no way to know what the experience of someone else is like, how could you possibly claim that something is an illusion simply because of contradictions?

It's like Hume's "is-ought problem". We know what is for the individual, based on what we perceive and experience, yet you project that to what ought to be, saying that your perception ought to be different from reality because your memory is telling you that this is not how it always was. But there is no logical connection between what is and what ought to be- that is just an emotional connection created by the confusion of your life. There is no logical reason your perception ought to be different from reality simply because of conflicting versions of your self from the past to the present, as you would just be arbitrarily choosing one or the other, eh?

When speaking of Maya or the demiurge or whatever cosmic illusion we're talking about, it's not so much that they don't exist. What's illusory is that they are the totality of reality. The illusion is the idea that the physical world is all there is.

Here, you are still using your experience as a basis for all of reality.

No, I am using experience as a means to understand reality. The difference between "reality is experience" and "reality can be investigated through experience" seems vast. If perception is reality, I should never run into a screen door. I didn't perceive it, so how did I run into it? There seems to be a consistent and external reality that my perception is based upon. Just because I cannot escape this human sensory manifold does not mean it doesn't exist - it means I have limited access. I can never experience reality 'directly', but I can repeatedly observe it and find some consistency.

Experience is full of contradictions and conflicting perception, yet you could not be experiencing any of it if you hadn't become conscious of it.

Couldn't agree more. Experience can be used to refute previous experiences. For instance, there is a classic video from a bank robbery used by many psychologists to illustrate this point. The video shows a white man pulling out a gun and shooting a teller. Yet all of the witnesses said, and believed, the black man standing next to him fired the shot. Was the video camera's perception biased or was the witnesses? Are the witnesses perception just as real as the video camera's?

If your transformation is, as you claim, an illusion, then how did you become conscious of it?

You cannot not be conscious of an illusion. It solely exists in the realm of perception. For all practical purposes, I define an "illusion" as a perception that does not accurately represent reality. You become aware that this perception is erroneous once it fails to pass some sort of verification or contradicts itself, such as perceiving you're a bird then falling to your death.

I'm not following your connection between the "is-ought problem" and idealism vs. materialism. Currently, we seem to be disagree about what is. I don't think either of us has mentioned how things should be.

To deny integral pieces of the experience as illusion is to create dissociation and fragmentation in the experience rather than accepting the certainty of the experience unconditionally and working to advance yourself in it

I do somewhat know where your going with this, as we want our profound experiences to revolutionize our lives and give us CONVICTION in our beliefs, but maybe its not denial but acknowledging the lack of understanding of the nature of the experience that one is having that has made one skeptical of the validity of the experience. You didn't will that uncertainty, for willpower and control are fallacies in a certain sense, as I'll cue in my nihilistic prospective

Your suspension of illusion is only a by-product of the experience, as you are skeptical the experience invalidates itself, and so the loss of meaning takes its natural course. I say natural because its natural to lose meaning and value towards an experience, this gives one the ability to evolve a deeper meaning and more meaningful experience next time around, but as for tying it in with what you seen it will definitely change you, but it will never clear all uncertainty, at least in my opinion.

Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that non-dogmatic perception is reality?

Lots of people like to live inside fuzzy dreams. I cant get over all these westerners talking about how life is just what its meant to be, its fair, everything happens for a reason, etc etc(add more nonsense)

Because living in Canada, its pretty easy to enjoy life, but if I cloud my perception with fuzzy concepts that don't mean anything, do I really know what reality is?

I HATE it when people use spirituality as an excuse to ignore the world NEWSFLASH!! Even REAL Buddhists care about their fellow man, and the environment. So many retards(IMO) keep rambling on and on about divine plans, and gods will these days that it makes me sick.
So what part of gods plan are all the children dieing right now a part of??

Its so easy for us to be so delusional, people read stuff thats so hollow, and fuzzy, then they use it as an excuse to neuter themselves mentally, and socially(as in helping you fellow man, using less etc)
