Dead posts? Time limits on discussion?

I've noticed that threads seem to expire after only a month or two now....!!!!!

WTF? This may be fine for all those off-topic forums here, but this seems to be a major problem for any serious discussion here!

People always bitch about repeated noob posts and posts on the same topic. Those are far bigger problems than gravedigging, which wasn't really much of a problem anyway IMHO.

Sure people bitch about gravedigging, but people usually only do it a couple times and then they learn not to.

This policy really sucks. It totally eliminates the usefullness of being able to discuss issues that repeatedly come up and forces people to start new posts. I just don't understand why this was done!

I wanted to post in advanced on a topic that is only from August. There has been a new paper on the topic and I wanted to post the update and discuss in the context of the previous posts. What you are going to do is prevent any long term discussion of any issue an create a bunch of fragmented, new, and repeat posts that don't go anywhere or have anyusefull info because they are subject to your timelimit. You're also going to have a bunch of posts that would have been updated, retracted, or corrected that are now going to be forced to remain wrong for all of eternity even when correct info is known.

What would actually be usefull is a warning aginst gravedigging posts older than 3 months or so. You could make a notice or icon show up next to the post button, or make someone click through an extra screen reminding them that they are gravediggin and should reconsider the relavence of their post.

It's totally self destructive to lock all posts that go inactive for a short while. It's kind of turned this site into a chat site that only works for short discussions. Anything meaningfull that takes longer than a month or two to develop just doesn't work here anymore.

Please change things back ASAP!

Whoops!  I'm in the habit of using the quick reply.  I see now that you've simply removed the quick reply from older posts and already implemented the suggestions I made.  :blush:

Sorry.  Good work.

I would also suggest that you let even the oldest of posts remain open, since the warning should deter any non-relevant posts.

Silly me.
