The Search for the Super-Substrate
    #603172 - 04/09/02 10:01 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

While looking for various substrate nutrient materials online, 'mi amigo' came across a fairly comprehensive page listing various grains and rices and a rough profile of each of their different properites...

http://www.foodsubs.com/

It would seem that most or even all of these materials would have been tried by someone at some point, but there is very little information on using any grain other than rye, brown rice, sometimes millet or quinoa. This looks particularly interesting, has anyone tried it? ---> http://www.foodsubs.com/GrainTrit.html

Is anyone else out there experimenting with different grains?

Ciao,
-BeautifulDay

As you may know I am very experimental and when I was reading the information about the grain techniques I immediately thought of Triticale. I am familiar with it because I origanally came from Manitoba where it was developed. It ends up just about in the middle between wheat and rye but is extremely nutritional. It is very hard and makes wonderful flour. I think the reason rye is used is because it stays intact without turning into goop. The triticale should be even better at staying intact. I have seen it for sale in Bulk food stores which always seem to have a wonderful selection of grain products. Anyone with a little extra space and a few extra spores should try out this grain. It could be a winner.

I've tried wheat grain with success so far. I'm also working with wheat floor instead of brf (PF style jars) and it's also very promising, day 16 with 90% colonization, i know it could be faster because i only used an heatsource at day 10, now incubating at 82F. Too bad i don't have the digicam anymore :frown: .

Peace,
MAIA
