Well said.
Use substrates that you can find for cheap, and are readily available in bulk. Use the ones that cause the least headache for you the USER. Some contaminate easier then others, some, are harder to get the moisture content right, etc...
Potency is the last thing you want to use as a means to judge different substrates.

Well, it's certainly possible to make a 'super substrate', and if anyone would bother doing it, it weould be the government. Of course, this would probably be an agar-based substrate with a grocery list of amines and vitamines and minerals added, with buffers and antibotics, tailored precisely to the needs of the mushrooms being grown.
...Of course, this is also a gigantic, expensive pain in the ass, that only an agency like the Government would bother with.

I completely disagree. Even the most advanced work that's been done doesn't show me anything that's better than the traditional substrates. Sure, there are some benefits, but there are also lots of negatives.
Pre-curser enhanced substrates have a measurable effect, but the high 'cin and low 'cybin is a big negative to anybody who wants to store them, as is the difficulty in dosing and aquiring the tryptamine.
The hormone enhanced substrates (brassinosteroids) have proven to be economically prohibitive, thus negating their "superior" performance.
Even yield increasing supplements such as spawn mate have proven to be of little help to someone already using high spawn rates of coloized grain.
I think that skilled growers on traditional substrates are probably producing near the maximum that is biologically possible, and no improvement of substrate is going to help.
I've personally seen yields around a dry pound per square foot over a month long fruiting period. I don't believe that the fungus is capable of much higher than that, regardless of substrate.
The only route that I see really progressing things beyond their current practical maximums are improvements in genetics, and all people currently claiming to be working on that seem to be a little less than qualified.
Not to mention, why in the hell would the government care about any of this in the first place?

Yeah. There's "Maximum possible" and then there's "practical" .. just go with hay, dung, etc.
