Rogues Gallery of Penis Envy crossed with PF albino, the F2 Generation. Trays 1-4

All trays are from different multispore wedges from the same petri dish streaked with spores from the F1 generation. As expected, the F2 generation has a variety of forms, including some features not observed in the parents.



Several pure white mushrooms were also observed but all aborted before maturity. I suspect that the pure albino isolates are overwhelmed by other strains and will do much better cultivated in isolation.

A partial or blotchy albino mushroom matured in tray #1 (far left). It is the tallest mushroom in the tray, is nice and straight and produced colored spores. Another partial albino is in tray #4 (far right) It is the mushroom in the center back and it produced colorless spores. Both of these were printed for the F3 generation as well as some of the penis shaped mushrooms.

Mushrooms showing the nodding trait (bending over) were eliminated from the breeding program.

The caps in the 3rd picture really do look unique and quite unprintable.

Dude, I LOVE the semi-albino shrooms! If you isolate a strain with that particular coloration and shape/growth habit, then i'd be interested in a print if you have any spare.

Next flush of the more interesting trays 2 and 3



Tray 2 has small but interesting bell shaped caps. Some mushrooms show the PE stem bulge just below the cap and some have a more regular stem.

Tray 3 mushrooms are robust with more PE traits, but lack the drooping in the PE parent.

I understand the crossing side of things, but my question is how do you stabilise the desired cross. As in, - say you get a spore print from the penis albinos - make a spore syringe and carry out the PF tek - wont you be back to having a range of genptypes again? My guess is you keep selecting the ones that remain true and keep going until variation is minimised - is this how it works?
Does that lead to problems with the viability of the culture?

Oh - and fantastic job too :thumbup: - the little family tree thing was a really nice way to show how things worked out.

Preschooler, he mentioned a few posts up that cross species isnt possible without something else such as protoplast fusion.

Excellent work Workman! I didnt think F3 would look that good.

He must be using spores, the point in breeding them is to create a stable phenotype - albino penis, that can be grown from spores and still look the same.
At the moment, as I see it he has been taking the spores from the mushrooms he likes after crossing- the ones that look like both penises and albinos, taking these and starting another monokaryotic culture which he back crosses with the albino parent again.

Each time he does this he is removing more and more variation until there will be little difference between spores. Stabilising the culture.

Cloning a mushroom isnt really useful in breeding other than to grow more of that mushroom. You need spores - 1n to make a 2n mushroom. I'm interested in how variation can be removed without affecting the viability of the culture.
I'm ploughing through "the mushroom cultivator" at the moment, so hopefully I can catch up. :laugh:

PS on the protoplast fusion thing I'm desperately trying to convince my lecturer to let me do one! Dunno how its gonna go...  :crazy:

While you're going through TMC, look up anastomosis. We can breed fungi by spores or by crossing dikaryons, either way.

Wasnt there some chemical that had to be applied to revert the dikaryon into a mono - or its sounds like you mean you can just cross a dikaryon with a dikaryon. Cool.
I'm getting there. Its a great book from what Ive read so far. :laugh:

Actually, that is pretty close but I am not back crossing back to the albino parent. I just did the one original cross and then I am just doing multispore innoculations for a few generations with selection of promising looking mushrooms. I am thinking I was just incredibly lucky with my selections to get pretty much exactly what I was looking for in just 3 generations.
