Biologists, Physicists, Mystics
    #5145965 -

Why is it that physicists are those most often to admit mystical qualities to the Universe and are usually the least arrogant of scientists, contrary to biologists or computer scientists?

try to find a prime movement
or try to explain existence

biologists have their noses in the muck and comp sci's are avoiding the mud altogether.

Having lived with a couple of physics majors in the past, I haven't noticed that they are any more or less open minded than anybody else...

we're not.

and i wouldn't say we are any more or less arrogant than other scientists, in general.

What is your evidence for such a statement? Demonstrate that biologists and computer scientists are usually more arrogant and less likely to admit mystical qualities of the Universe before we can even begin to tackle the "why".

In other words, validate your observation before we can begin to speculate on the nature of such observation.

While I don't know where you got this from, it could be because physicists are, probably more than the others, interested in "the Universe" and are more amazed and see more amazing symmetries and mathematical logic in their models of reality. They find it "mystical" that they can model reality so "easy" and well.

Just a hypothesis on a hypothesis...  :smirk:

i think with physics being the most fundamental of the sciences, physicists are confronted more often with the more fundamental philosophical questions. while its not our job to answer those questions, it does mean we recognise them and often end up thinking about them.

my professor once told me 'philosophy is the physicist's hobby'.

Its all ways of looking at the cause and effects of the enviroment. In the sciences, you have to set up tests and make hypothesis and tests those hypothesises. Then that data is what you beleave in as fact.

Physicists have to use imagination to draw up complex theories.

Mystics know what they know and dont need to bother proving what they know as real, maybe at one time at a young age they did, but to them the soul and the natural world is all they need to know.

it's not necessarly nonsensical, there was a recent survay done which found that out of all scientists biologists were least likely to believe in God (if we can equate that with mystical beliefs) with 41% of the biologists expressing disbelief. i can't seem to find the % of physicists to compare it to but here is a link to an article on the survay http://www.physorg.com/news5785.html which makes it clear that biologists are least likely to believe.

Its only not necessarily nonsensical if you can prove what relevance a belief in God has in terms of "mystical qualities".

That is to say, what mystical qualities is he referring to, and what exact mystical qualities are these physicists admitting to?

Let's try to substantiate these things a bit.

yes, i said "if we can equate that with mystical beliefs". i'm not saying that we can. i just thought it was of interest that biologists stood out as the least likely to believe among all disciplines.

Well duh, someone who does not hold the same meaningless, unsubstantiated belief as oneself is arrorgant, quite possibly ignorant, as well.

i would really like to address everyone but i desperately need to score (haven't gotten laid for a year or so)
