Can scientific thinking (Physics) and Mystical thinking (Metaphysics) ever truly be reconciled ?
    #13005683 -

Share your insights on this, explain any relationships you see between the two.

Why do you think physics and metaphysics are incompatible in the first place?

I think so, but I still get nagging doubts about the way I view things. I make suppositions based on what I know from my life experience that sound plausible to me, but everyone views things in their own way. I can't take the view that I'm right and everyone else is wrong, can I ?

Doubtful. One is based in evidence and the other in wishful thinking and fantasy. As far as I can tell.

Lack of evidence is the reason behind the wishful thinking and fantasy.
The fact alone that people are willing to believe a fantasy should be enough of a cause to investigate scientifically and work on producing evidence.

When a child goes missing and the police fails at finding it , wishful thinking and fantasy come into play in the parents minds.

It could be dead.
It could be suckin dick for 5 dolla in asia.

There is no evidence , but the fact remains that the child is missing.

I feel the same way about the relationship between scientific and mystical.
Some matters , science fails to explain.
There is no evidence supporting the claim that 'telepathy' for example doesn't exist while the evidence that does support its existence is very unreliable.

In cases like this , someone under the impression that they had just experienced telepathy , will logically go with what you have called wishful thinking , because he/she has the experience , to back up what used to be 'fantasy'.

If you are walking down the street and all of the sudden you see a big disk shaped craft flying faster than any airplane you've even seen , it will only be logical for you to assume that they do in fact exist , since there is no evidence to prove that they dont.

The only question that really remains is whether simply leaving the possibility open , can produce the illusion/hallucination of such a paranormal/mystical experience and we dont really have a hard answer for that either.

If you say "i dont know if ufos exist. I've never seen one but other people claim they have.
In the media and the scientific community , these occurrences are explained usually explained away with what sounds more rational."
- Then logically.. you have more of a reason to believe that they dont exist. Since A - personal experience is lacking
and
B - there is no evidence for it.

But as soon as you see one .. this all changes.
The scale is slightly tipped and once that happens it keeps tipping more and more.
I think its important to somewhat resist this momentum and not  get taken away into one of the extremes.

In the end , the answer always seems to be the hardest thing for humans to achieve - Balance.

"Its not a matter of right and wrong , but righter and wronger "

I don't think they should put god in a cage and do experiments on him. I don't know why but I just don't like the idea.

Yes they can be reconciled, I did it. I already filled the gap between science and mystical thinking and so the scientific world is getting pretty close too. Spirituality, mystical thinking is actually the same thing as scientific thinking. Mystical thinking starts from the "bigger picture", while science starts from the smaller picture. While science is looking at the trees, mysticism is looking at the forest.. in the end, both types of thinking, if they keep on evolving, will collide.

Besides.. How is quantum physics not mystical? How is string theory not mystical? How is the multiverse theory, not mystical? It can only be not mystical, if you haven't looked into it. The scientific world agrees, a unified theory, is not known yet, therefore, by definition, the solution that is science is looking for is still a mystery.

You define God as nothing, but what if I define God as a parrot? Then it would be easy to put a parrot into a cage.

Of course I don't believe God is a parrot, I'm just pointing out that everyone has their own personal definition of who or what God is. To me God is the invisible intelligence ruling the evolution of the universe. The intelligence that is behind the fixed set of laws taht everything obeys to, those fixed set of laws science is looking for and when they will find it, they will call it the unified theory.

To me God is more like a principle, a thought. Plato believed that behind this world, there was a world of "ideas". Each atom would come from the idea of an atom, that is why all atoms follow the same rules. So God would be the idea that all other ideas stem from. The main principle behind all principles.

Quote:

But....
God is this.
God is that.
God is me.
God is you.
God is everything.
God is nothing.

Therefore....
God is also parrot.

As for the question....

A thousand years ago, if you had told someone you could split apart the most fundamental force of nature, to create a gigantic explosion.
That would be in the realm of fantasy.

Its reality now.

Double split experiment.  Would be heresy, and extreme fantasy back then.
Its reality now.

OBE's, Telepathy, etc....
Are still in the realm of fantasy now.
But we're taking steps.
Give it a few decades or centuries and these things will be common sense.

The more we learn.
The more we adapt the theories and science to fit the picture of reality.

The world was once flat, though it has always been round.
We just imposed our "theories of flatness" upon it.

So just because our "scientific picture" today, doesn't include metaphysics.
Whos to say one day it wont??

And the way I see it....
String theory, M theory, G8 theory....all seem pretty metaphysical to me.
Just....how do we harness that.

Funny how your name is "QiQong". The theory of Qi Qong, believes that nothing is actually "ether", "prana" or "God".

Science calls this nothingness, vacuum, it's when science will realize that vacuum is actually a substance, that is when science and mysticism will be reconciled.

Can scientific thinking (Physics) and Mystical thinking (Metaphysics) ever truly be reconciled?

No.

As was already pointed out, one is based on observable evidence and can test its proposals to see if they hold up to scrutiny.

The other is based on faith. Believing things that are not in evidence, even when they directly contradict other metaphysical beliefs also not based on evidence. Often metaphysical beliefs persist in spite of DIRECTLY CONTRADICTORY evidence.

It doesn't matter to the True Believer that there is a giant mountain of evidence supporting evolution. They still reject it, often without even bothering to study what it is first. Just accepting on faith what's told to them by someone at their church without cracking open a textbook.

The fact alone that people are willing to believe a fantasy should be enough of a cause to investigate scientifically and work on producing evidence.

Scientific investigations HAVE been done. When you take the phenomenon out of an environment where someone can kid themselves that it's true or even outright cheat and lie, suddenly the phenomenon doesn't happen.

Search through this forum for dozens (maybe hundreds) of testable metaphysical claims who summarily refuse to put their claims to an honest test.

Typical excuses:

"I don't care to show my powers to anyone" even though you spend hours talking about your powers in this forum.

"I don't have the time to be bothered winning the JREF million dollar challenge" even though winning the challenge would give you unlimited free time.

"I'm too busy taking care of [fill in the blank] to test my claims" even though irrefutably proving your claim would change the world and instantly ensure whoever you take care of would be taken care of.

"My magical powers cannot be tested scientifically" then why do you complain when scientists ignore your claims?

... and so on.

I think that science can find explainations for the way a lot of things work. I don't think this is a problem, it won't change anything.

There are some things that exist only in subjective experiences. Most skeptics say there is no reason to think these things actually exist. I guess if they find a way to study subjective experiences thay may be able to study everything.

Science calls this nothingness, vacuum, it's when science will realize that vacuum is actually a substance, that is when science and mysticism will be reconciled.

Your ignorance of the body of scientific knowledge, particularly regarding what a vacuum is, is depressing.
