I'm still on the fence with this one.

Sometimes I think no, there is no such thing as "original" thought - any "new" idea is simply a re-configuration or sum of older ideas. Of course that begs the question: where did the first thought come from, the one from which all other thoughts have been made?

Then the other times I think yes, there is such thing as original thought. The very act of putting together old ideas into a new one is creating something "original", even if it is based on older thoughts.

I think there is such a thing as an original thought, but that these days mostly only in technical fields as a by-product of new discoveries. Not brilliant, world changing original ideas- boring, scientific original ideas like "I bet if I fire a laser into laser-polarized cessium gas I can stop the laser beam and make it exit later by turning off the polarizing lasers..."

As far as philosophy and political science, I think we're all dried up there. Unless you count the ideas like "There is a flying saucer hiding behind a comet and if we all just drink this we can go there..." which seemed pretty original to me.  :grin:
