Personally, it's worth the effort for me to record television programs in advance rather than watching them real time as they're aired. It doesn't suit me to schedule my time around the TV, cuts down greatly on my time spent by skipping past the commercials and only viewing the program's content, and being somewhat of an archivist by nature (primarily I watch documentaries) I can keep the programs that I might find useful to refer to in the future. I do this all from my computer.

This comes naturally to me, but if I had children I would certainly make such a rule (I'd probably restrict how much television was watched as well).... if only for my own peace of mind :O Though hopefully it will plant some seeds too. Sounds like a rule long overdue..... I hope it works out for you.

My "rule" was not based on the TV being evil, but it was based on the way people let it rob them of their freedom of choice. Recording things you like for later viewing demonstrates conscious choice and not blind zombie TV watching.
