Okay, when dealing with songs, the author's interpretation is not the only one. Anyone who listens to that song will come up with their unique interpretation which is just as valid. The only way to grade an interpretation is to examine the reasoning for their interpretation.

NOTE: I wouldn't call this an interpretation.

So far, it sounds like a self-pity party and cry for attention.

"And if no one will quench the flame
I'm not obliged to do the same"

meaning that if no one will help him stop feeling "sad" or whatever, he wont help anyone else with the same problems.. As far as the entire song and its meaning.. I see nothing deeper than a person tired of dealing with people and thier egos, and just wants to live his life in solitude. meaning : Maybe not solitude from human contact, rather from opening up and getting to know people, and dealing with thier good and bad sides.

It also seems like he's attempting to justify becoming a loner to himself.

Okay, my interpretation.

The author is alone because of his optimistic views. He thinks Utopia is possible as is the discovery of Ultimate truth.

Does it have something to do with him feeling like he's not fully understood? Ugh...I have no idea. It seems so literal.

"No, that is entirely incorrect. Otherwise we could be applying allegorical or other interpretations when the author's meaning is a highly specific one. As is the case for this song."

if u think music is about finding the writers true thoughts and interpreting his statements, your wrong. Music is about putting your own meaning to the words and applying it to yourself. im sure u know this

It seems to me that Mr. Rundgren is thinking that he'll never find someone to love, who would love him back.

But, hey, it's a stab in the dark... and I've been wrong before.

Is it a song about how everybody interprets things differently and that is why he (and everyone) is alone? :stash:

It's about Stephen Hawking.

The day will come when, after harnessing the ether, the winds, the tides, gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And, on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.  -Teilard
