it was a depressing weekend...
    #5016607 -

my boyfriend's father is in the final stages of lou gehrig's disease. i have known him since he was diagnosed (about 3 years ago) and have watched him turn to nothing. he was hospitalized on thanksgiving with pnemonia and ended up returning home with an estimated two weeks to live. he has been in a wheel chair for about the last year, he still prefers to stay in the chair (vs. the hospital bed at his house). every bone on his body is visible and all of his muscle mass has depleted, they have to keep the heat off in the house or else he overheats and goes into a panic attack.(mind you it's about 15-20 degrees where he lives) he cannot do anything for himself at this point, he can't adjust himself in the wheelchair, he can't eat solids, he can't take a drink from a cup without two people helping, he can't even talk or even point to words on the word bank we made him. he's on oxygen and about 12 different medications, which he is reluctant to take (except morphine). this is truly the most unforgiving disease i've ever seen, and the fact that we all knew what was going to happen made it harder. i would rather lose someone to a sudden death than to be torn apart like this, he is a very admirable and respectable person and he will never be forgotten. my sympathy goes out to everyone inflicted with this disease and the families that have to struggle through it.

Did something depressing happen to you or are you being smug?
Forgive me if I'm picking up on your smiley face in the wrong manner ....

I'm very sorry to hear about your boyfriends father.

Excuse Gomp. He has splinters in the windmills of his mind.

I'm sure it was a difficult thing to see, this is life and it isn't aways the way we would prefer it to be.

True, I've friends who's fathers/mom had cancer and just went from a human to well nothing basically.

Part from a song if dutch hiphop (translated ofcourse):
It wasn't a human, but a corpse with a beating heart... (doesn't sound that good when it's translated though but you get the point)

It's hard to see someone you love going through all of this.

I'm very sorry to hear about it, stay strong

i recently saw my aunt waste away fomr cancer.. hard thing to do. i regret not spending enough time with her.

best of luck with your situtaion int not an easy thing to see, or to come to terms with. the slow agony of a "dignified" death gets questioned alot in my mind.

"in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption"

"People do it every day, they talk to themselves ... they see themselves as they'd like to be, they don't have the courage you have, to just run with it."

I do not have any experience with this (thankfully) but I wish you/your family the best.
