"Rich"
    #4947622 -

So I've been attending these engineering entrepreneurship "View from the Top" lectures here at Cal. All the speakers being independently wealthy, one of them gave his philosophy about being "rich."

"Being rich isn't about having a big number in your bank account. Being rich is being able to go around the world, hiking up mountains, carrying a 15 kilogram backpack full of camera equipment, skipping lunch, and taking pictures. Being rich is having the time to do that."

Unfortunately, in capitalistic America, not everyone can be "rich" by his standards. Paradoxically, in order to be the latter "rich" you must gain financial independence. Alas, much of America, and much of the world must work and toil everyday just to survive. Indeed, even those of us who drive $150 000 Porschas are in fact no bit "richer" than a driver of a beaten up bucket of bolts.

It all depends on who you are....BUT I hate going more than a day or two without eating.

There is always an exception....but one can eat shrooms on a vision quest...another exception. It is also a way to avoid going hungry.

I used to brew beer. I have been thinking that it would be cool to add liquified shrooms to a batch.

Hi Daba, how's it going?

"Being rich isn't about having a big number in your bank account. Being rich is being able to go around the world, hiking up mountains, carrying a 15 kilogram backpack full of camera equipment, skipping lunch, and taking pictures. Being rich is having the time to do that."

It sounds to me like that guy was differentiating between being rich and being wealthy. Not all rich people are wealthy, and not all wealthy people are rich. For example if I were the CEO of a nation-wide retail company, and became a millionaire a few years down the road, I am rich, but in order to maintain that quality of living, I would have to maintain that career. However, if I owned several acres of real estate in downtown Manhattan, which are rented out by high-class long-term business tenants like ChaseManhattan bank, then not only would I be rich, but I would be wealthy, because there is minimal effort to maintain that quality of living - then I would have the freedom to go out on the Swiss Alps with a ten pound backpack of camera equipment and other goodies, or travel the world whenever I wanted to.

Good point, and a lucrative investment option, Skorp. Now, how are you going to get the liquid capital used to buy those downtown real estate worth millions in Manhattan?

being rich, or wealthy, is irelevant compared to being happy and at peace.

Happiness comes from control over your own mind. The ability to choose weather any given stimulus creates a negative or positive reaction is the ONLY requirement for happiness.

If you can master your emotions, money is about as nescessary as a comb for a bald man, or shoes for a palm tree.

I appreciate all of your responses, but how many of you actually were in a situation when you had enough money that you could travelling for months without having to worry about your financial state?

Re: "Rich" [Re: daba]

I am currently in such a state. I do not consider myself rich(financially) or wealthy. I just got back from a week long trip out west, and will soon be taking a two week trip to more agreeable climates.
If I wanted I could probably stay retired for 20 years and live moderately. But instead I have chosen to invest in a few things and spend the rest bettering the lives of those I care about, and having some fun in the process. Then, at the time of my choosing, I will give it up and join the Army.

There is a fulfilling quality about being able to do what you want, but it is not what I want. For my life to be rich I feel I need to accomplish certain goals. Not many years ago I thought about being in my current position everyday. It was my goal. Now I've attained it and it is not what I had thought it would be.

But I think that guy is talking about the monetary difference of rich and wealth. To me rich is $10,000,000+ Wealthy is $250,000,000+
Basically, rich is the ability to live very nice. Wealth is the ability to live like, or better than, the rich guy and not have to work for it. Living off investments and interest.

Well, it involves cross-dressing, lots of makeup, fine liquor, and the damnest impression of Donald's trump wife that I can pull off. :uptosomething:

How could I ever resist the Tila?

You can choose to be happy. You do it by unconditionally accepting whatever is happening in your life in each moment. This is not a pipe dream, it's an aquired skill like any other. The best blue print I have seen is Ken Keyes, The Handbook to Higher Consciousness. Try it for one month and you will begin to have control of your happiness. Most people will not try it though because they are convinced ( egoic fear) it cannot work for them.
