 Canadian Gun Law Question

In The Pub, someone discussed having their house broken into and having to fight off an intruder. I suggested a firearm and he said he'd have to get a permit for a regular rifle or shotgun. For a pistol or an "assault weapon", he has to have a special license and pay a special tax. He can only shoot this weapon at the range. If someone were to break into his houseand he used this special range weapon on them, to defend himself and his family, he'd be charged. Is that true?

Amen. When I got my concealed carry permit the cops asked me if I knew the laws regarding the use of deadly force. I told them that if I ever use deadly force I simply don't care what the law is because it would be a situation where I was saving my life or the life of someone else. I have never seen a sheriff with such a big smile on his face.

I have a friend who lived in the country, far from any quick police response time.
He had a profitable business running out of his home and had been broken into twice.
He also had a good collection of weapons in the house on display.
One night we were visiting and enjoying ourselves in his rec-room in the basement.
We heard a loud crash, he grabbed a rife and we all rushed up stairs to see what was happening.
A man rushed out of the house as soon as we arrived upstairs and we called the cops.
He met the cops at the door wielding his rifle and specifically asked the cop if he was within his rights to shoot the intruder.
The cop told him...
"If you shoot an intruder, make sure he is inside your home, or drag him back inside. If you shoot him outside, You would be charged."
Whether it would stand up in court is another matter.
It would probably depend on if the intruder was armed and if your life was in danger.

I certainly don't think that's true...not the part about being charged, anyway (you DO need special permits to own handguns or other "restricted" weapons here in Canada).
The rules about self-defense are pretty much the same here as I hear they are in the USA. Technically you are only supposed to use "equal force" in return to an attacker (if someone hits you with a punch, you can't shoot them but CAN punch back). I doubt in any case where it was obvious that someone shot another person in self defense that person would get in any trouble at all.
However things could get a little more tricky if, say, your "attacker" was completely unarmed and you gunned him down anyway. Or if you shot him in the back 8 times while he tried to flee your house. In those cases I can see the person involved getting in some trouble.
