Iraq war keeps oil from terrorists, Bush says
August 31, 2005
BY JENNIFER LOVEN
CORONADO, Calif. -- President Bush on Tuesday answered growing anti-war protests with a fresh reason for American troops to continue fighting in Iraq: protection of the country's vast oil fields that he said would otherwise fall under the control of terrorist extremists.
Bush, a onetime oilman, has rejected charges that the war in Iraq is a struggle to control the nation's vast oil wealth.
But on Tuesday, Bush said the Iraqi oil industry, already suffering from sabotage and lost revenues, must not fall under the control of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida forces in Iraq led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
Compares resolve to FDR's
''If Zarqawi and bin Laden gain control of Iraq, they would create a new training ground for future terrorist attacks,'' Bush said. ''They'd seize oil fields to fund their ambitions.''
Appearing at the Naval Air Station North Island to commemorate the anniversary of the Allies' World War II victory over Japan, Bush compared his resolve now to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's in the 1940s and said America's mission in Iraq is to turn it into a democratic ally just as the United States did with Japan after its 1945 surrender.
The speech was Bush's third in just over a week defending his Iraq policies, as the White House scrambles to counter growing public concern about the war. AP

Keeping the oil out of the hands of over-zealous religions extremists willing to use force sounds like a great idea.

So first Iraq was this meteor about to hit our country at any second, was in cahoots with Bin Laden and had to be dealt with immediately. Now Iraq was in danger of being taken over by Bin Laden. See that's what happens when you tell a lie? You have to keep covering it up with more lies until the truth is exposed.
At least now he's admitting that oil is a motivation for this war.

I think it would be a great idea if Iraq's oil wealth fell into the hands of Al Queda. I think that would be neat. Super duper. Walla walla bing bang.
What a great idea. I think George Bush must be Hitler to think otherwise.
Iraqs oil wealth was once funneled into terrorism unde Saddam. It wasn't good for them, and it wasn't good for us. That is just my opinion.

I would say that Iraq is better now for us than under Saddam. Saddam used the oil money to pay for terrorist acts. Al Queda would do the same.
Lets not try to argue if we should have invaded Iraq, because we already have. This actually happened years ago, though we still debate whether we should go to war in the first place. We are already there.
Since we are there, take a more pragmatic approach and use reason.

A highly debatable opinion given the loss of American lives, our increasing debt load and the international hate for Americans it has bred.

The moral and emotional funding of terrorists resides firmly in a reaction to U.S. foreign policy, something which our 'leaders' refuse to address. Terrorism can be done on the cheap, a couple of cell phones, some nitrate based fertilizer and some diesel fuel (for example) - hardly a domain reserved to those who control oil production. If your goal is to 'drain the swamp' to stop the breeding of a dangerous swarm, you do not first fill it up with water and continue adding nutrients.

It is never unwise to examine past mistakes. First, you can learn from mistakes so as not to repeat them. Secondly, you can make sure that you do not put similar short-sighted people in charge in the future. Thirdly, understanding mistakes can give you insight into the best way of extricating yourself from predicaments resulting from said mistakes.

The more pragmatic approach would be to not throw good money after bad and not waste more American lives and tax dollars under this justification or the the other illogical justification of sunken costs. What has been lost there by the American soldiers and American taxpayers cannot be regained. What has been created is anarchy, more ill will towards America and Americans and an important recruiting tool for future terrorists.
