September 11 and Iraq: Short Memories

The mainstream media continue their faux outrage over the link that President Bush drew between September 11 and the Iraq war in his speech Tuesday night; here is one of countless examples (embedded link at original -- Phred). This is, frankly, mystifying; as one of our readers pointed out yesterday, the connection between the Iraq war and September 11 was made explicit in the text of the Congressional resolution that authorized military action in Iraq. Here are some excerpts:

Quote:
Whereas members of al Qaida, an organization bearing responsibility for attacks on the United States, its citizens, and interests, including the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, are known to be in Iraq;

Whereas Iraq continues to aid and harbor other international terrorist organizations, including organizations that threaten the lives and safety of United States citizens;

Whereas the attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001, underscored the gravity of the threat posed by the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction by international terrorist organizations;

Whereas Congress has taken steps to pursue vigorously the war on terrorism through the provision of authorities and funding requested by the President to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such persons or organizations;

Whereas the President and Congress are determined to continue to take all appropriate actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such persons or organizations;

Note that the resolution puts the Iraq war in the context of September 11 without saying that Iraq was involved in those attacks; it recites what was indisputably true--that Iraq harbored members of al Qaeda.

One would think that administration critics like Joe Biden, John Kerry, Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer would remember what was in the resolution, since they voted for it. I can understand why it would be convenient for the Democrats to forget that the resolution that authorized the Iraq war specifically and repeatedly linked the rationale for that war to the September 11 attacks. It is not so clear why mainstream reporters and commentators are so willing to share the Democrats' amnesia.

It might be too hard for them to read.

Let?s just make this clear for everyone out there. I have heard so much about the ?way this war was sold,? and how we were ?tricked? by the WMD claims.

IRAQ WAR FOR DUMMIES

Here is the way the reasons for using force in Iraq were OFFICIALLY given to the American people via our congress:

(in order written in the resolution)

1. Iraq?s past war of aggression and illegal occupation of Kuwait in 1990.
2. Iraq?s failure to abide by the unequivocal sanctions agreed to after 1991.
3.Iraq?s history of possessing chemical and biological weapons and advanced nuclear weapons development program (and failure to prove complete destruction of such weapons)
4.Iraq?s flagrant violation of the cease fire
5.Iraq?s attempt to thwart efforts of weapons inspectors up until 1998
6. U.S. Congressional resolution conclusion that Iraq was continuing WMD programs in 1998
7. Iraq posed a continuing threat to the national security of the U.S, international peace and security in the Persian Gulf regions
8. Iraq continued to possess and develop a significant chemical and biological weapons capability
9. Iraq supported and harbored terrorist organizations
10. Iraq engaged in brutal repression of its civilian population
11. Iraq refused to release, repatriate or account for non-Iraqi citizens wrongfully detained by Iraq, including an American serviceman
12. Iraq failed to return property wrongfully seized from Kuwait
13. Iraq has demonstrated capability and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction against other nations and its own people
14. Iraq has demonstrated hostility toward and willingness to attack the United States by attempting to assassinate former President Bush
15. Iraq has demonstrated hostility toward and willingness to attack the United States and Coalition Forces by firing on many thousands of occasions on US and Coalition Armed Forces enforcing United Nations resolutions
16. Members of al Qaida are known to be in Iraq
17. Iraq continued to aid and harbor other international terrorist organizations, including organizations that threaten the lives and safety of American citizens
18. The attacks of September 11, 2001 underscored the gravity of the threat posed by the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction by international terrorist organizations
19. Iraq?s demonstrated WMD capability (noted above), willingness to use WMD (noted above) and the risk to use or provide such weapons to terrorists (noted above)
20.UN Security Council Resolution 678 authorized the use of all necessary means to enforce UN SC resolution 660 and subsequent resolutions
21. The Iraq Liberation Act (Public Law 105-338) expresses the policy of the US to support efforts to remove the current Iraqi regime from power and promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace the regime
22. It is in the national security of the United States to restore international peace and security to the Persian Gulf region

So what? Reason #19 turned out not to be immediate and imminent enough

I'm sure every country in the world "harbors terrorists".
So you're saying that... that is justification for invading each and every one of those countries? :cuckoo:

Comparing it to the Crusades is absurd. I hope you're not being serious.

Then you are wrong. "Harboring" has a very explicit meaning in this context. Iceland doesn't harbor terrorists. Syria does. Iraq and Afganistan used to.

You obviously havn't met some of the middle Americans that I have.
Many yahoo's look at this whole conflict as  Christianity vs Islam. My dad happens to be one of them.

His response to 9/11 was "bomb em all", followed by various ingenious ways to label Muslims.

"Towel-heads"! ROFLZ man how did they come up with that one?  :rotfl:

It doesn't matter what the nutjob Christian Americans think. What is going on over there has very little in common with the Crusades.

I understand how some could think it is an unjust war, but comparing it to the Crusades stems either from a lack of knowledge about the Crusades or a lack of knowledge about what is going on over there.

I wasn't comparing it to the Crusades.
I was comparing Bush's attitude towards it.
For example, this is what he said a week after 9/11:
"This crusade, this war on terrorism, is going to take a while."
He obviously thinks he's been put here by God to save us all.

Sorry, I totally misread your post.  :blush:

Yes, Bush's choice of words was bery tasteless. I find his use of Crusades just as offensive as the lefites that use the word "genocide" for the loss of civilians in Iraq. It seems the whole nation (all sides of the political spectrum) need to take a few courses on "English Language 101".

Definately. The word "crusade" has sharp religous meaning..
Dictionary.com says it's "A holy war undertaken with papal sanction"....
