grey mold
    #433118 - 10/22/01 08:39 AM (23 years, 1 month ago)

a FOAF is having problems with grey mold. This manifests during the 1st or second flush. PF-style jars were sterilized in a pressure-cooker for 20 mins, innoculated with PF spores from a trusted source. the needle was flame-sterilized between jars. no contam was evident in the colonized jars. They were birthed into a (nearly) airtight plastic container and humidified using wet perlite. temp varies around ~25C (~79F) and Relative Humidity about 95% Air exchange is by opening and fanning with the lid.

All looks OK until some of the pinheads go dark brown. dissection at this point reveals grey mold inside the shroom stems, but none visible in the cakes themselves.

My FOAF wonders whether these might help:

  1. adding Peroxide or bleach to the perlite.
  2. using an aquarium bubbler for air exchange, to avoid opening the terrarium, optionally passing air through peroxide or bleach
  3. using electrolysis to produce O2 to the same end...

My FOAF is determined to succeed, and would be open to almost any suggestions as to how sterility might be improved.

yes, adding h2o2 to the perlite water is a good idea.
