Self confidence.

"The self-confidence of the warrior is not the self-confidence of the average man. The average man seeks certainty in the eyes of the onlooker and calls that self-confidence. The warrior seeks impeccability in his own eyes and calls that humbleness. The average man is hooked to his fellow men, while the warrior is hooked only to infinity"
Anyone but me think this might be true?

Castaneda certainly sought approval from outside sources. (Do you think he wrote his books to lose money or to make money?) Seems he didn't learn much from his fictional character.
I don't think it is that black & white. While one may "go their own way" or "do their own thing", I think all of us bathe in the approval of others even if not a primary goal.
Great men and women may indeed break the bonds of convention or "what is expected of them" with blatant disregard for hypnotized society's approval; yet they may indeed be pleased by recognition from those whom they admire; from other pioneers.

argument: imagine a person who never looked at themselves through the eyes of another. wouldn't that person be self-absorbed?

All good stuff. I don't really care about Castanada the person. What I care about is what he wrote and that it resonates for me. I like much of what he said and it reminds me of Taoism for instance. At least in places. If I can use it, it matters not to me where it comes from. That's why I don't need to be concerned about what kind of a human being Carlos Castanada was. Or Einstein either. I think the whole issue is interesting only because people get so upset about it. I can only guess why.

Einsteins' formulas "worked"; Castanedas merely sounded cool. If you think you can do the "Gait of Power" I will take you into some rough desert terrain at night and you can impress the hell out of me. Otherwise, picking out a random point or two is hardly following the teachings.

Swami, The passage I quoted works for me, well enough. I have never seen mescalito on even 12 fresh peyote buttons, it was in the book but frankly I don't believe it. Maybe someone could use the gait of power. Just because I can't doesn't mean anything. But this is all beside the point.
I pick and choose what resonates with me. I can try it out and if it works then I use it. If it don't I conclude it's false or I'm not ready for it. So very simple when I'm not invested in defending anyone. I like some Buddhist ideas too. But I don't believe all of it. Why throw it all away. Same with you friend. I have and do disagree with you on occasion. Yet you hold great truth for me also. I choose not to disregard you based on our disagreements but start fresh with you each time.

Swami says--This appears to be some people's outlook. I contend that we all must blaze our own path and seeking approval from others only slows our growth and promotes insecurity, as their approval can be rescinded at any moment. This is not to say that we don't learn from others, but the constant looking around for validation is indicative of fear; not spirituality. _______________________________________________________________________
Just remembered this Swami, and points up what I say about truth. It doesn't matter where it is found. You can agree with it even if your arch enemy says it.
