have to say the big bang is a silly idea

Please tell us your theory, and why the evidence we've gathered and the observations we've seen creating a theory which has worked for us so far is a "silly idea"?

I'm sure you have a good theory, and I've been wondering about logical alternatives to the Big Bang.

yes i believe that i am just a brain + body.

My mother was rapped and I am the result...

maybe it makes more sense to say that all our emotions are our ancestors' emotions. we evolved the capacity of love because men and women who loved were better at reproducing their genes. same goes for hate/whatever emotions go into rape. every emotion we experience is a connection with our ancestors. even the darkest dwelling sad to say.

like, there's this part of the brain that if you electrically stimulate, the person has an OOBE. but that was because at some point, capacity to have OOBEs gave an evolutionary advantage... what the hell?

i agree that the environment must stimulate the brain. i'm saying that dna 'chooses' (or is chosen through natural selection)- what we *can* experience. then a small island of that we act out with our lives.

imagine, there could be emotions/experiences that it is impossible for us to have because those genes were naturally selected against. what would those other emotions _feel_like_?

i guess i prefer the idea that DNA (+RNA? my biology is poor) is god because a) it's unfeeling. for me the big bang seems like wellspring or gift but i really believe god doesn't care about us. b) our DNA(/RNA) is the image we're fashioned in. and xNA or some DNA of one of our ancestors is some other being's god.

is DNA the only god? natural selection (i would call raw power) is a god too. perhaps 'higher'. i have a friend of mine who agrees with you ravus and it's intriguing the similarity in argument. and yes the big bang is god too psilocyberin. i admit in a way it's just preference to call it DNA.

The Divine is everything, and everything is the Divine.

I feel it goes far beyond DNA.

The brain is to the body, what a transmission is to a car. It is simply a communication device between the body and the self/mind/soul/spirit. Of all the experiments and mapping of the brain, the storage and location of memory has yet to be found, which would be supporting evidence that there is some part of ourselves that exist beyond the brain.
If you were just a brain, OOBE's would be impossible, because how could you experience yourself from outside of yourself if you were just a body+brain? What is "seeing" your body when 360 degrees of perception are available as your vantage point is a foot above your head?

i've never heard of any conclusive proof that oobe's let you see something 'in the next room' or whatever

you hit someone hard on the head part of their personality/cognitive ability disappears. i dont know of better evidence that the person is contained in the brain.

you look at a brain, there's no part that's manipulated by an outside force. if there were it would have been found and would be the biggest discovery in the history of humankind.

every aspect of the brain has not been understood but that's because it's complicated. the brain may even rely on this complexity to function. check out walter freeman's how brains make up their minds. he argues that the "chaotic" electrical maps perpetually shifting across the brain is where the salient brain processes lie. thus one would not be able to localize much of it's functioning. why should the brain localize its functioning? to make it easier for scientists to understand? ha!

as for the physiology of memory itself i dont know much about that per se. but i know there are plenty of cases of people's memory being altered in different ways through physical damage to the brain.

it seems more parsimonious to say that "soul" is just one way of describing the brain, rather than something separate from it because it's complicated. there's expansiveness of theory (variety of interactions among neurons) vs. parsimony of theory (neurons+electrical impulses vs. neurons+electrical impulses+soul).

last but not least if you take drugs your mind alters. that's evidence of a physical soul.

do you really think you are really just a brain?

I thimk the brain provides the major seat of my personality, memories, thoughts etc yes.

Am I more than that? Maybe.

Do I subscribe to a spiritual dogma which tells me I have a soul? Afraid not.

here's a picture of where the different kinds of memory are localized in the brain:

How come a solid blow to the head often results in amnesia?

Some scientist also think they have found the areas of the brain involved in memory:
