Ok one final post tonight about the amount of rain required. When growing at home, most people "super saturate" the mycellium cakes right before fruiting, when theyre fully colonized, allowing them to absorb alot of water by placing the cake submerged in water over night. The cakes are then placed under high humidity and ideal temperature to produce the actual mushrooms.

My theory is that once the weilii mycellium absorbs a certain amount of water, underground, they will fruit but only once it reaches that super-saturated level. So if we do get some sequential rain days ahead and the particular patch you're looking after reaches its maximum hold of water, you will have a flush.

It's always easier to just go after a period of 2-3 days of consistent rain fall because its more likely that during that time your patch will absorb the required water amounts for a flush, maybe thats why they usually fruit towards the end of the year, the begining of the year is just fueling the mycellium and once it reaches critical mass during the summer rainy season, near fall they all burst since obviously the temperatures and humidity alone arent enough to bring them out.

i had 5, 4 turned orange and didnt smell, like i said i am pretty sure they werent weilii

the 5th was all white and didnt seem to bruise at all, but that one got thrown away on accident

oh well i will find some when they come up

It rained all over the Atlanta area last night and again this morning. It doesnt seem like it was enough. But if so prime hunting would be Sat-Mon.

I recommend going out about 2, no more than 3 days after the rain has stopped. Saturday is kind of pushing it unless it rains rather continuously until then. They can be easier to spot by day 5 of the growing cycle because they turn whitish and don't blend as well with their surroundings but by this point they've usually lost some potency and not to mention any other hunters could spot them too.

By the way, where I hunt is in the open kind of, and I've had atleast 3 people in 1 single hunt stop and ask me if I'm hunting weilii and look at my bag with amusement. Including a guy from this very message board People all over cherokee know about weilii and they're looking for them too so be the early bird who gets the worm.

For those of you who only have one direct spot where you've spotted them growing, instead of a long stretch like a golf course then realize that your patch is only going to produce a few times in the year with each flush getting smaller. It may be best to find a more prolific area of growth. But don't worry too much as the hardest spot is finding that first patch, almost always, there are more growing in the general vicinity.

Sorry, what I meant by a direct spot is maybe a 1 foot diameter where you've seen them grow and not outside that diameter. The place I hunt is mowed every 2 seconds it seems which spreads the spores everywhere about the area. A direct spot would usually be seen in patchy grass etc instead of well kept bermuda lawns.

Im not hunting till I See some pictures anyway. Its been way to dry lately. I would say start hunting after another good rain, but if i see some pictures to prove me wrong ill go grab my hunting gear.

Ya, my best spot is mowed like EVERY DAY, I swear. It makes me wonder why they mow so often when the grass does not need it.
I have to be out there ASAP or else I will miss the weilii.
They aren't out yet, at least in all the places I have checked.
This rain situation is bugger.

I didn't find any in the spot close to my home, it was never a big producer anyways. I'm not driving to where I usually hunt until someone else finds them either.

The mowing actually helps them become more prolific in your spot though so its give and take, just gotta catch on to when the mowing schedule. Once in mid-october of last year they had just mowed and we were so sad but went out into the grass anyways and found that all it did was chop them into nice chunks and scatter them everywhere. The ones under the grass werent touched by the mower thanks to their strong root systems. Mowing spreads the spores so well.
