Compress? You mean smash together? You want it nice and airy. If you mixed it, then let it colonize until it's all white, then case.

It's really only needed if your straw is in large pieces sticking up everywhere. Otherwise, not necessary.

well i didn't cut my straw, but it's not really sticking up drastically everywhere on the surface of the casing

i figured airation was good but i've read in it seems like most straw teks that a weight is used/needed during colonization, thanks guys

1-3 inches is fine, I don't really believe in "too small" unless it's ground down to dust.

thanks for the reply's... just wanted to ask cause it's been 3 or so days so i put the casing together and when i peeked in at it i couldn't really tell if it was colonizing or not... i'm guessing it's still a bit early to tell

Myc. Rips through straw...what are your conditions and did you mix the straw up well w/ the spawn...and did u break up the sub. real well?(dime size or smaller?) and how much sub. per sq foot -in terms of sub. vs spawn? More spawn = quicker colonization, less to colonize and more point of inoculation

Conditions:
1. incubating @ 77 room temp (so inside bin is prob. bout 80) in closet.
2. fruiting in martha w/ coolmist (24/7) & ultrasonic(15min every 2 hours) and 2 four foot floro's for lighting (mounted on cieling)
3. Straw was mixed well w/ poo in bin, each seperatly hydrated then mixed, bagged and oven pastuerized for 1.5 hours. straw was soaked overnight and hand squeezed to proper water content.
4. did not cut straw, but poo was mycosupply.com, fit well in 12x12x6 bin
5. for both bins, used 7 halfpints WBS well broken up by hand and layered. i put down a thin layer WBS on bottom, sub bout an inch then spawn, etc. using half of a half pint each time i laid spawn (quite thinnly layered but many layers in the 4 or 5" deep substrate)

hopefully i won't have any probs. getting this to colonize, thanks all

What ratio of poo to straw did you use?

--------------------
Is the glass half-full or half-empty? I say it is both.

not exactly sure honestly, all i did was feel out about 3 or 4 lbs of straw and measured out a dry lb of poo, hydrated it then mixed it w/ the straw

i was aiming for a 1:4 poo:straw
