Pastuerized Poo/straw life
    #816224 -

I pastuerized some poo 2 days ago, left it covered in my shower to strain.
Forgot to use it last night, was wondering if it would still be useable tonight or if i`d have to pastuerize it again?

Once it's properly pasturized and at the correct moisture content, you could put it into a large zip-lock bag and store it for months in ready-to-use condition.

*EDIT* ?You haven't showered for over 2 days? PHEW! And I thought horse poo smelled!!

Hmmm, don?t think so. What you forget is that by pasteurizing alone many bacteria and some molds still survive.
If you leave the pasteurized substrate uninoculated, it will "spoil" eventually.

But not after 2 days.

In reply to:

I think you mean not BEFORE 2 days. Probably not before 10 days at least.

What I needed to know.
More poo-straw to spawn puts a smile on my face.
Hope the PUerto Ricans do better this time.

Probably much sooner.

I'll take your word for it. I always spawn it the day after pasturization anyway.

Here you have it:

Paul Stamets  and J.S Chilton: The Mushroom Cultivator , page 124

Spawning Methods

Spawning methods, like spawn itself, have evolved over the years. As late as
1950 Agaricus brunnescens growers customarily planted walnut sized pieces
of manure spawn or kernels of grain spawn in holes poked into the compost at
regular intervals. Using this method spawn running was slow, and areas far from
the inoculum were more susceptible to invasion by competitors. The full potential
of grain spawn was not realized until the development of "mixed spawning". The principle of mixed spawning is the complete and thorough
mixing of the grain kernels throughout the substrate. In this manner all parts
of the substrate are equally inoculated, resulting in the most rapid and complete
colonization possible.

The standard spawning rate used by Agaricus growers is seven liters/ton
of compost or one quart/8 sq. ft. If spawn is readily available and cheap, it
is advantageous to use high spawning rates which lead to more rapid colonization.
It is also advantageous to break up the grain spawn into individual kernels
the day before spawning. If the spawn is fresh, the grain should break apart
easily. If the spawn can not be used when fresh, it should be refrigerated at
38?F.

The basic principle of spawn running is the same regardless of the type of mushroom
or substrate. COLONIZATION MUST PROCEED AS RAPIDLY AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT OTHER
ORGANISMS FROM BECOMING ESTABLISHED
. Once the mushroom mycelium becomes dominant,
natural antibiotics secreted into the substrate inhibit competitors. To prevent
invasion by competitors it is important that spawning take place under carefully
controlled hygienic conditions. Fungus gnats in particular must be excluded,
and for this purpose a tight, well sealed working area is best. This area and
all tools should be disinfected one day prior to spawning with a 10% bleach
solution. When using disinfectants be sure your skin is protected and avoid
breathing any fumes.

Thanks Anno, but you know I've got the book. You didn't have to go through the trouble of scan/ocr, but I suppose it's a good post for those who don't have it.

Pasteurizing allows for the proliferation of beneficial bacteria which compete with unwanted contaminants.

Unfortunately, I'm not a microbiologist, so I will have to provide somewhat of a rudimentary answer. When material is pasteurized, the heat generated kills off bacteria that could compete with the mushrooms for food and even harm the mycellium. The remaining bacteria does not compete with the mycellium for food (or harm it for that matter) and can even make additional nutrients available.

Hope that clarifies things somewhat...

I heard from Road that if you re-pasteurize something, you are killing off that beneficial bacteria. Is there any truth to that? Not that I would ever doubt road, but I see ppl posting "Yea, I pasteurize'd it 3 times, let it sit for a week, and am going to pasteurize it again" (I am streching it a bit, but just to provide a example)

Sterilizing will certainly kill all the bacteria, but I wasn't aware that multiple pasteurizations would kill the organisms that were resistant to the temperatures pasteurization maintains. Maybe Roadkill will chime in and clarify this for us.
