Poo/Straw Soaked too long?
    #1560868 - 05/19/03 07:21 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Pop quiz!
Little Jonny gets his poo/straw is loaded up in a pillow case and weighted down into a large "kettle" and sits it on the stove with a cover. He generally soaks the substrate for 24 hours and then pasteurizes at 170F for 1 hour. This time, however, little Jonny had scheduling problems and the poo/straw soaked for approximately 70 hours with a 100% water replacement and quick rinse every 24 hours. The stuff doesn't smell very good and now that little Jonny is heating the kettle up to pasteurisation temps it really reeks and not like shit either, pretty acrid. The question is whether or not proper pasteruization can be achieved. Referring to GGMM Chapter 18 page 168 (Softback) Under Alternative Fruiting Formulas (Right before covering pastuerization) Stamets speaks of immediately pasturizing a mix (Not including dung or straw) as microbes reach a critical level and make the mix worthless. Has anyone sucessfully used repeatedly soaked and leached poo/straw? Any recommendations?

no good feedback, but it sounds like letting
it go that long would lead to rot.

the answer the question is that little Jonny discovered quite quickly that pasteurisation temps would not restore a proper microbe balance as the smell simply got worse. Jonny pitched this mix much as he would have done immediately had he any straw to make a new mix
