vermiculite coarseness?
    #3940942 - 03/19/05 07:05 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

i just got a huge bag of vermiculite after going to three gardening places and they all had the same type and only this one type. There is no number or any indication on the bag how coarse or fine the vermiculite is, so how can i tell if it is good for PF Tek?

IMHO.... verm mix that ranges in size from sand to pea size is best. The real fine sand size stuff alone - compacts to much.

If the vermiculite you got is the real fine type, like sand, I wouldn't use it. The mycelium will have a hard time colonizing the inside of your cakes. They colonize better with a more airy type cake.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony.

well, it isnt really sandy like at all, im wondering if it is too coarse... it isnt huge chunks, but about the consistency of styrofoam when you crumble it up as much as possible, feels like that also.

Since this is my thread, i can hijack it also with another question, if someone could answer it.... I got 3 syringes, with numbers 1-10 on the side, is this 100cc, and also, how many 1/2 pint jars could i inoculate with these three syringes?

(im psyched! i got golden teachers, penis envy's and B+)

O.K., your vermiculite sounds like it will be O.K. As far as your syringes, yes, the 1-10 are CC's. You want to inoculate each 1/2 pint jar with 1 CC, evenly proportioned amongst your 4 innoculating holes. 3 10 CC syringes should get you about 27-30 jars. Depending on if your syringes are over filled, a lot of vendors fill them to 12 CC, and on how good a touch you have.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony.

ok, one last question and i swear i am done....

I got a closet i am thinking about growing them in, but it doesnt have any air flow really. Do I need airflow? or no airflow? also, what are the best cleaning agents for sterilizing a grow room? I was going to lysol the whole closet from top to bottom, but thought i would ask first in here.

You are definitely going to need gas exchange for fruiting. Need to get rid of that CO2 buildup and replace with fresh O2. You can use a water bleach dilution to clean your closet, and then spray with Lysol. If you do decide to use your closet, you could always run some fish air pumps to your chambers.
