vermiculite?
    #3090513 - 09/04/04 09:26 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

i got some verm from some lab my borther works in...
it looks like the coars type to me...
what i want to know is... should i grind it abit? (would that be like using the finer type or would that be counter productive?)

i'm afraid i'll put too much water in there... i just put some water with the verm just to see how it's supposed to look and i put too much but had no problame straining the extra water out... would it be such a big deal if i didn't get it right the second time either? i mean... is it ok to put a little extra water and then strain it (to be sure i completly saturated the verm?)

thanks in advance

The fine verm is better for using as a casing material/and for Dunk and rolling. The coarse Verm is better for using it in PF cakes as the larger pieces make more spaces in the substrate so its not as compact. That said they will work the oppisate way also just not as well.you could grind some if its real large, but be carefull not to get carried away, you dont want dust.
As far as how much water, just add the water real slowly little by little untill when you grab a little bit and squeeze it between your fingers water just comes out.Remember you can always mist some later, you dont want it over soaked.
Also if you do add too much you can just throw it in the microwavre for a minute or 2,to dry it up.

Butternut has suggested a good idea (microwaving to dry it up a little if you make a mistake but make sure you don't cover the substrate when trying to dry it up in the microwave.

No they don't all have to be submerged in the water....you can stack them.

Good luck!~

IMHO course is best all around and definitely better for casings! The reason being it provides a much better microclimate for pinning IME and allows the casing to also breath much better that goes for PF cakes too IME. GL

I use coarse verm. due to the fact it was the only vermiculite i could find... I ended up buying a 17 lb. bag for $20, and that seems reasonable to me because I had to repot all of the cacti I grow besides that, so i used some in cactus soil.

I don't like the chunks to be TOO big in my cakes because sometimes when I mix it won't fit just right into the jars (up to the thickest line where it screws in), so I put it in my coffee grinder I use to grind up long grain organic brown rice. I just pulse it 2-3 times and it works great. It's easy to get carried away doing that.

I don't know how it works for casings, but I reccomend getting some Perlite for humidification if you don't have a sonic humidifier or the like.
